GPS-enabled Mobile Phone Games are here...
Today Boost Mobile announced the first GPS-enabled Java cell phone games in the United States with 2 games "Swordfish" and "Torpedo Bay" that were developed by Blister Entertainment.
The games use the GPS capabilities of most cell phones to figure out where you are, then it creates a virtual playing field that you get to play on.
In Swordfish, the idea is to catch fish, as the game randomly puts fish all over the virtual playing field. You walk around using the playing field and your GPS-based location on the screen to go and "get" the fish.
In Torpedo Bay, the idea is that you are a submarine, and other ships are firing at you. Your mision is to sink all of the ships. The game uses Location Application Platform (LAPâ„¢) that
is a multi-palyer platform that allows multiple players from multiple carriers to engage in the warfare. You get a combination of a top down look at your local map, including your locaiton along with the location of ships around you. You then need to seek those ships out, fire torpedoes at them and sink them before the ships hit you, lower your health score and ultimately sink you. whoops, don't forget to look both ways before you cross the street in pursuit of that destroyer!
