New Garmin StreetPilot i5 - building on the entry level of the Automotive segment

Garmin today announced the Garmin StreetPilot i5 GPS Navigator, it is pre-loaded with detailed maps of North America which includes the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. It features three buttons on the face of the unit: on/off button, "back" button, and a unique and convenient click-to-enter scroll wheel -- which makes it easy to select a destination from the unit's menu-driven interface.

Like its siblings the Garmin StreetPilot i2 and Garmin StreetPilot i3, it provides voice prompted, turn-by-turn directions through a built-in speaker, and the unit easily moves from vehicle to vehicle with an integrated suction cup mount. If a driver misses a turn, the Garmin i5 will automatically suggest an alternate route so they can quickly get back on course.

"The i5 gives customers exactly what they want - a compact, affordable, portable GPS device with pre-loaded maps at an incredibly low price point," said Gary Kelley, Garmin's vice president of sales. "It's the perfect out-of-the-box, entry-level car navigation system."

The Garmin StreetPilot i5 comes with POI loader software that allows you to load locations of interesting things like school zones, speed cameras, etc. The build in proximity alert system allows you to set alarms when you get close to these areas, avoiding the "headaches" that might come with speeding through a school zone.

Want to compare the StreetPilot i5 vs. the StreetPilot i3?
The new StreePilot i5 has onboard maps, no downloading, no shuffling, etc. The StreetPilot i3 still has a color screen and the turn by turn voice promting, but it uses maps that are downloaded from the MapSource City Select North America NT DVD onto a TransFlash - flash based memory card. Recall that the StreetPilot i2 has a monochrome screen.

The Garmin StreetPilot i5 will be available in October 2005 and for a estimated list price of $535.
