Magellan RoadMate 800 Announced

The latest in the RoadMate series has been announced (not officially - more later) upping the ante on the hot automotive GPS market. The Magellan RoadMate 800 adds a couple of extended features on top of the popular RoadMate 760 released earlier this year, namely a build in MP3 player and a photo viewer. Magellan calls it a "multimedia marvel." This release comes on the heels of the new Automotive GPS, the Magellan RoadMate 360 which was announced September 14, 2005 (see article).

Anyway, much like it's little brother the Magellan RoadMate 760(see review), the feature set on the GPS side of the RoadMate 800 is plush and rock solid.

Its 3.5" color touch screen shows your position with multiple views including a maneuver list. Simply select a destination and your Magellan RoadMate 800 GPS navigation system will guide you through every turn. It automatically calculates the most direct route and recalculates whenever you take a detour or make additional stops. SmartDetour will automatically route around stopped freeway traffic. Not bad, but again, the Garmin StreetPilot 2720 has the optional ability to add on an FM based device to receive live traffic feeds giving you real time data on road conditions. The SmartDetour function here will give you a new route when traffic slows down (when you get IN a traffic jam). BIG Difference.

With the integrated rechargeable battery you can use your Magellan RoadMate 800 even when you don't have access to power. Use it to view photos of your family and friends when you are away from home, listen to your favorite music with the built-in speaker or use the included headphones, or enter addresses and trips from wherever you are.

Built-in detailed street maps and over 6 million pre-loaded points of interest make it easy to find the nearest restaurant, gas station, ATM, airport and more. It has never been easier or more fun to get around town or take long trips to distant locations.

Digital Music Player
Magellan Music Manager Tools software enables you to easily transfer your .MP3 and .WMA files from your computer to the over 4.5GB of available internal memory. You can also insert an SD or MMC card containing your digital files listen to lots of music. You can browse your music, create playlists and adjust the sound to your personal liking with a digital equalizer pre-set to various music types (MP3 files only). The test will be in the interface. The iPod has shown that having the killer interface is king, and lots of other MP3 players that reside in the trash show that merely being an MP3 player doesn't cut it.

Photo Viewer

Take the photos on the road and view them on the 3.5" full-color display. Simply view them or even transfer them onto the RoadMate 800's internal memory from an SD or MMC card. Transfer your favorite pictures from your PC onto your device using the Magellan RoadMate Tools application provided.

This adds to the Automotive GPS battle going on right now in the US between the entrenched Magellan with their new RoadMate 300, the recent RoadMate 760 and their rival Garmin with their the Garmin StreetPilots (i2, i3, i5, c340, 2720),

Expect it in October for about $1099 (street).

ReadMore UPDATE: This link was taken down. The company has not officially announced the product. We found the product page with product specs and information on it on the Magellan website. They did too. This is now an empty page, and as I understand the product will be announced "officially" - in the near future.

The maps on the RaodMate 800 sucks! They must be at least 10 years old. The update sells for $79.99 on their website, but I think you would do better buying a competitor’s model.

I found that a site called autonavdirect sells the updates for these units. They recommend you send the item in and have them do it incase the unit freezes up. I like my roadmate 760 and do not want to get a new unit that does not have as many points of interest.

Thanks and hope this helps you all get your units current.

how can I get a map update for my gps, magellan800 roadmate.......

I purchased a MRM 800 in April 2007. Unit work well and tracks in all kinds of poor conditions. Not happy with map updates. Will probably look to the competition as the maps are not being maintained. Not much good when the maps are ten years old. Entire subdivsions and malls missing in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Purchased a Roadmate 800 in 07 and have noticed a couple of addresses that do not exist. Is an up-dated map available? When, Where, How much?

I have an 800 and am very happy with it. How do I get a map update? My Dr. opened n office on a new street that is not even on the 800 database, so it doesn't know how to spell it.

Thanks, land line phone # is OK for a real person to call to ask
