TomTom ONE GPS Announced

Update: TomTom has announced that the TomTom ONE will be shipping in the US. See our review of the TomTom ONE.

TomTom announced the launch of their TomTom ONE all new GPS for the Car that extends their line-up of already great automotive GPS receivers. Today marks their launch date for Germany and the Benelux countries, with a UK launch later this year; no word on a US launch date yet.

The price of 399 Euros puts this below the 499 Euros for the TomTom GO 300 unit (See TomTom GO 300 related article). This unit should give Garmin a run for their money pitting it against the new Garmin i-series StreetPilots (i2 , i3, i5). (See related article on the Garmin StreetPilot i3)

The big news is that the TomTom ONE uses the SiRFSTAR III chipset, which is well known for its low power consumption and its high accuracy in the face of weak signals. This is the chipset that Garmin just put into its recently announced Nuvi (see article), and the Garmin Edge, the training GPS for bicyclists (see article).

The TomTom ONE comes with a touchscreen, that has an anti-glare coating, which is a big plus for this unit. The operating system is expected to be the same high quality as the rest of the line with intuitive menus and fairly flexible configurations. Of course it has typical navigation options (fastest, shortest routing), and types of items to avoid (highways, etc), but it also has spoken word turn signals, and speed adaptive volume. Like the rest of the TomTom line, the TomTom ONE comes with integrated Bluetooth which allows you to use your Bluetooth enabled phone to tap into the TomTom Plus services: Weather, traffic and voice downloads.

Like the TomTom GO 300, the TomTom ONE will use and SD card for navigation maps.

Specs:
* 32 MB RAM - CPU: 380 MHz
* 3.5 inch, 320 x 240 full TFT color LCD touchscreen
* Unit measures 110 x 89 x 34 mm, 260 grams (~10 ounces)
* Operating temperature: -10 to +55 C
* USB port and cable for PC connection
* Internal rechargeable Li-Ion battery
* Integrated GPS receiver based on SiRF Star III with 20 Channel All-in-view tracking and support for (not in the box) active external antenna.
