Slope Tracker keeps track of your ski day via GPS
Quite possibly the coolest use of GPS technology has come along, and I thought I had to pass this on. So yea, we wade through the dozens of uses for a GPS, mostly centered around tracking sex offenders via GPS, but this one has some pretty cool features that appeal to the techno-freak in me.
The idea is that you strap this GPS device on in the morning, and drop it off after a great day on the slopes (on your way to the brew pub), and they tell you some of the facts about the day. On any given day you can track the number of runs, vertical feet, speed, calories burned, distance traveled and more via this GPS tracking system. At the end of the day they get a color print out detailing their accomplishments. (Yea, I know, these measures are mostly things that you can get with a basic handheld, but that's not the point.)
So, Slope Tracker extending the GPS into yet another sport, like Garmin's Forerunner into running and their Edge into Biking, we now have a service pushing the GPS service into skiing.
The Slope Tracker costs about $20 a day, and gets you a fancy printout. The printout also compares you against their database, so you know how you stack up versus all the other snow bunnies, posers or hot shots that came before you and wanted an ego check. The service is available at several resorts in the Rockies.
