Magellan Upgrades the RoadMate 760
Magellan has announced an upgrade to their mainstay RoadMate 760 with a few catch-up features as well as a few innovative ideas. The RoadMate 760 was launched last year, and quickly got swamped with the rapid succession of Garmin entries into the mobile market. These upgrades to the RoadMate appear to be a decent defensive measure to keep the product relevant in an increasingly competitive market. There are a few interesting evolutions of the software, including a password capability that allows you to set a password to protect your settings and presumably your POI’s, etc. Other upgrades are discussed below.
There are a couple of solid mounting upgrades that are welcome. The RoadMate 760 will now come with an upgraded windshield mount with a large suction cup and swivel head ensures a strong grip while providing adjustable positioning. You may think that this is a minor improvement, but let me tell you a bad mounting system can ruin your GPS experience and turn a good GPS unit into a total frustration. An innovative option is an Advanced Cradle that facilitates easier external antenna installation for vehicles like RVs and 18-wheelers, and also facilitates easier permanent installation with the optional hard wire kit.
Other upgrades that are seen more commonly in the market, and will set the bar for newcomers as the standard include:
• An automatic night mode option adjusts the map display for optimal viewing and brightness based on the time of day.
• An enhanced Locate screen provides a speedometer, altitude, compass information and the street number range for the block where the vehicle is located so drivers have the peace of mind of knowing exactly where they are for added safety in case of emergencies.
• Drivers can view their destination on the map screen to gain perspective before routing.
• A choice of 12 languages all with male or female voices.
• Automatic volume adjustment increases the volume when the vehicle speed exceeds 45 mph.

Any idea when this upgrade will make it to the Magellan software update page? As of March 15,2006, there are no updates listed for the Magellan 760.
Do you know if this update will be available for 700 owners who upgraded with the v5 release which "makes their units a 760"?
