Gadget of the Week: Alpine Blackbird GPS PMD B100

The Apline Blackbird GPS was named “Gadget of the Week” by Time magazine this week. The unit is a mid-tier mobile GPS device that is geared towards integration with your life as it is fully loaded with maps for navigation, plays MP3’s through its FM modulator and is ready to guide your through the tough spots with its traffic ready receiver for grabbing live traffic updates.
The recently announced unit (see our article) is hitting the market soon, and is positioned to do well in a fiercely competitive set with Garmin, TomTom, Lowrance and others. The device runs on the Microsoft Windows CE platform. All controls and functions are easily manageable from the larger touch-screen in-dash monitor or with an optional remote control. The 3.6-inch digital LCD touch screen delivers 16.7 million possible colors and anti-glare technology for easy at-a-glance visibility. You can extend and update the Map information by connecting it to a computer using a built-in USB 2.0 connection or you can directly put in information using the built-in SD/MMC card slot.
The unit plays MP3’s through its SD card slot and reportedly is able to play and navigate simultaneously over your FM stereo in your car.
