Happy Patriot's Day - Running the Boston with a Forerunner
Today is Patriot’s Day; the day that the American Revolution in effect started. Patriot’s Day was recently celebrated here in Massachusetts (Monday 4/17), which means that most of the state takes a day off for an official state holiday and we recognize the day that the revolutionary war started the ball rolling for the formation of our country. For some, it means dressing up in period garb, grabbing a musket and re-enacting battles around Lexington and Concord. To our readers in the UK - this is as much a re-enactment as it is a memorial for the fallen soldiers; not a party, more of a respectful event...... For baseball fans it means an unusually early Red Sox game (11AM), timed to finish up by the time the runners of the Boston Marathon are crossing the finish line (Fenway Park is pretty close to the marathon finish line). This year marked the 110th year of the Boston Marathon, and about 20,000 people participated in the well known run. Garmin is a sponsor of the Boston Marathon, along with other marathons and bicycle races across the country this year in an effort to spread the word about their Forerunner and Edge series of GPS training devices.
MotionBased, the training site that uploads your GPS based training data is also supporting many of these events also (MotionBased is owned by Garmin). MotionBased offers a fly through of the Boston Marathon via Google Earth as well as a few courses that people uploaded after the event. MotionBased will also be tied into a larger list of events as they come this summer.
“We are excited to be a sponsor of some of the United States’ largest and highest-profile races,” said Gary Kelley, Garmin’s vice president of marketing. “Whether you’re a serious athlete competing at the highest levels, or simply want to use GPS technology to help you get in shape and lose a few pounds, the Garmin Forerunner and Edge series of fitness products is just what the doctor ordered.”
As part of the sponsorships, Garmin will host an interactive booth at each event’s exposition area, as well as at many finish lines. Signage and outreach to participants is also included in the sponsorship.

Data acquired on the Forerunner and Edge may be analyzed with MotionBased.com, a ground-breaking web-based application that translates GPS, heart rate and cadence data into performance analysis, online mapping and route sharing. MotionBased displays the information acquired through charts, illustrations, reports and maps. Users can overlay and analyze their routes on a variety of elevation profiles and maps -- including Google Maps, aerial images, topographic maps and 3-D mapping technology from Google Earth. In addition, MotionBased’s TrailNetwork lets athletes share over 235,000 courses from around the world with other users.
To demonstrate the power of the Forerunner and Edge fitness products, Garmin will showcase members of “Team Garmin” – everyday athletes who are using the devices to help them run and pedal faster and farther. Visit http://garmin.blogs.com to follow Team Garmin’s pursuits.
