Polaroid MGX-0550 GPS Unit with DVD Player

PolaroidMGX0550.jpg

Yes, you read that right, a Polaroid GPS that plays DVD's - and you thought the only thing that Polaroid did was to push out those instant pictures from years ago? Shame on you. Polaroid has been pushing into a lot of consumer goods lately, should it be a surprise that they got into one the hottest electronics categories – the land of the GPS? I have to admit I was surprised to see this, but even more surprised to see DVD playback. My kids have been bugging me for a DVD player in the car, and they know I love GPS’s, but could we both be happy with this? When I told them about the DVD player, all that they could say was "Whoa". Can I navigate and play a movie at the same time? Will they still say "Whoa" if I can get my hands on one?

The Polaroid MGX-0550 GPS comes preloaded with maps of all 50 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico, the MGX-0550 is ready to use right out of the box. For starters, a 5.6” LCD touch screen lets you easily access features while a unique rotary knob lets you zoom in on maps. Simply touch your way to where you want to go for instant door-to-door directions. You’ll also enjoy a built-in DVD player that entertains with DVDs and music CDs. Don’t worry about missing your turn; the MGX-0550 quickly interrupts your music for your latest instructions. The on-board battery will also run the DVD for up to 3 hours.

Has anyone tested and reviewed the Polaroid MGX-0550 as yet?

Bob,

I have not seen one, and have tried repeatedly to get one for a review but can't for whatever reason. They are apparently going to be a feature at Sam's Club for Black friday so you might go there to play with one and see for yourself if it's right for you.

I just purchased this yesterday and so far it is fantastic! The screen is huge and the directions are easy to follow with voice prompts at appropriate distances to allow for lane changes. The top of the screen shows the direction of the next turn and road name in large type while the map shows where you are and shows the next turn in plenty of time.

I live in a fairly rural area and was concerned that the maps would not be detailed enough in my area, but they got me to my address using the exact route I normally take. I also used it to drive to a Ruby Tuesday's that was already programmed in and it was right on target (actually said I reached the destination about 100 yards before I got there, but I won't count that wrong LOL.)

The screen is plenty big to watch DVD's and the picture quality is great. I haven't run the system through the FM in my car, yet, so can't testify to that feature.

I got mine at Target on sale for $499 plus 10% off for signing up for a Target credit card, making the system quite affordable compared to others I priced.

I forgot to mention that the only issue I have found is that the keyboard letters are okay for my small fingers, but I could see that it might pose a problem for someone with larger hands. I have to retype letters every once in a while if I get in a hurry.

I bought mine at Sams club yesterday for $399. It was a one time buy, and supplies are limited, so hurry.

For the first few months I was very happy with the unit until it went haywire while on a trip. Had to call a friend to give me directions to get me back home. I called customer support, they said to send it in for repairs and they would have it back to me in 10 to 14 days. That was over a month ago. I've called numerous times only to get the same answer, "out of stock, no estimate of when we will get anymore in, Sorry".
Very frustrating to say the least. I'm almost at the point to go out a purchase another one, but not a Polaroid.

I bought one of these and loved it. Except for the weight, it did everything it was supposed to. And then it stopped charging and died about 2 months later. I contacted Polaroid and sent it in to be repaired and was told it would be about 2 weeks to get it back. That was over 6 MONTHS ago.

I have called and emailed Polaroid numerous times and was told they were out of stock and I should wait. Now they want me to jump through hoops in order for me to get a refund check instead. After dealing with their incompetence and dismissive emails, I've concluded that they've lost my return and are doing nothing to rectify it.

I have contacted the Better Business Bureau about this, and Polaroid never responded to them, either. This is the WORST customer service I have ever had, and now I will have to take legal action in order to deal with this.

Do NOT buy from Polaroid! Save yourself the money and time that you will have to spend dealing with customer service once your product stops working.
