TeleAtlas Finishes Mapping All Western Europe
The road less traveled seems to be harder and harder to find. TeleAtlas has announced that they have mapped all of Western Europe. That’s all well and good, but I thought that the numbers were pretty interesting. Tele Atlas European maps now cover more than 7.8 million total kilometers, the equivalent of traveling around the Equator 195 times or a return trip to the moon 10 times. What was the fuel bill for all that mapping?
Within Western Europe, the database now reaches more than 386 million inhabitants, includes 1.7 million ‘standard’ points-of-interest (POIs) and nearly 90 percent of all house numbers across the region. That’s a lot of data. My hunch is that it won’t be fitting on just any old GPS system. You’ll need hard drive space for this much information, and probably a big wallet, as these maps on a GPS system will cost a bit more than your single country GPS system.
