New GPS: Magellan RoadMate 2500t

The new RoadMate 2500t GPS navigation system was announced and should be available this month, just in time for the holidays. A few more details follow. Again, it’s got a small form factor that is going to be great. Basic navigation in a small pocketable size, but pioneers this concept of a CrossOver GPS. It comes pre-loaded with maps and Points of Interest of the US, comes with an integrated battery for easy use away from the car. The Outdoor features are included out of the box; I like the idea of this. This includes Topo contour maps and more. I mean this is pretty good. Don’t know if I think of this as a backpacking GPS, actually I know I don’t – doesn’t sound like you can bring more batteries, but I like the idea of this for outdoor living. Hey, it’s even waterproof!
Weighing 8.5 ounces, the Magellan RoadMate 2500T features the new user interface for easier navigation, Smart Detour, SayWhere™ text-to-speech directions delivering audible street names for extra driving confidence. Impressively it includes optimized multi-destination routing for the quickest and most efficient way to get to all those stops on the schedule
The list price on this is $549 (small upcharge from the RM2200 at $499; I say take the extra features for $50), and will be available in December.
Its traffic capabilities are along the lines of other units; showing you in real time the incidents ahead of you. The service will be available in Late 2006.
