GPS Units to get a lot more accurate.... in Denver
Regular GPS units rely on signals from satellites to get their location data, but those signals essentially degrade as they travel to us, making for GPS accuracy in the 10-ft range. Well there are also ground based facilities that can send correction data to GPS receivers to make them more accurate. The correction facility in Denver just got a big upgrade that will allow highly accurate users (Surveyors, etc) of GPS equipment to measure in the centimeter range.
CompassTools Inc., the provider of GIS field data collection tools that established the GPS base station in 1998, has joined with Trimble and the University of Denver in upgrading the system to provide centimeter-level accuracy and real-time correction broadcasts. So users within 200 miles of Denver should be able to use this signal for highly accurate GPS purposes.
