Update: See our review of the Delphi NAV200 GPS

The Delphi NAV200 arrived for review here at the GPS Lodge, and we've already got this inexpensive GPS on the windshield, ready to go. The Delphi NAV200 GPS is a flat form factor (good move), has an internal battery, is based on NAVTEQ maps and POI's and has a SiRF star III under the hood. It takes the multi-media play up a notch with picture and movie viewing, as well as MP3 playing. I have to say that I am also getting my reversi fix these days playing it on the Delphi NAV200 - it has this game loaded on the machine. Sorry, no Minesweeper.

All of these functions are driven by the fact that the unit runs on Windows CE OS and a 400 mHz processor. I'll tell you that there are some warning tones and confirmation tones that you can set on the unit. Well, this being run on Windows, one of the options is the chime I have go off on my computer when email has arrived. It's a little odd to be driving down the road and have a chime go off that you associate with email arriving. It's configurable, so if you hate it, change it, but at this point it's fun.

The unit does voice prompted navigation, but not text to speech that you find in higher end units. Interesting thing is though in my first few rides with this unit, it will take on some simple road names, like "Left on 2A" when I need to take a left onto route 2A. It won't speak the name of my street or other "named" streets that I have noticed so far. So far the voice commands are clear and accurate.

The unit is TMC Traffic ready, but I don't have the optional antenna. That will be available later this year. The service is offered in many major metro cities, and is fed over the FM spectrum.

OK What's in the Box for the Delphi NAV200

Things are nicely presented in the package and you get:

  • The Delphi NAV200
  • A flexible windshield mount
  • 12V power cord
  • Adhesive dash mount
  • SD Card pre-loaded with Maps and POI's of the US and Canada
  • DVD with the Owners Manual and Back-up maps
  • A Quick Start Guide

I get the sense that Delphi really wants you to have a good experience with your NAV200, as they have offers of technical help all over the place: on a business card in the Starter Kit, on a sheet insert in the box, and in large text on the box.

We're off to go drive with the Delphi NAV200. See you later.
