Garmin Zumo 550 - Routes in Action
One of the things that I think is a great move by the Zumo 550 designers is the fact that the Zumo can load hard coded routes and navigate you on them. See, I got my "GPS start" using a handheld eTrex and have used them extensively to plan bicycle routes on a computer, download them to the eTrex and then navigate them with the eTrex leading the way. In these situations, like taking a touring ride on a motorcycle, you don't want the "Optimum" fastest route; you want the route you plan. For a while now, I have wondered why you can't plan, navigate and save a route, or simply save the route you just took as a "good route" when you find an alternative to the initial route that was recommended. Now this gets into consumer feedback to the GPS, and I am all for that, but it's a little off-topic here. Anyway, there is a good easy to follow explanation of how a pre-programed route will be managed within the Zumo 550.
On the Zumo 550 "Routes" will be an additional icon when you want to navigate somewhere. After you pre-load a route from your computer, you will find it here under the "Routes" icon. You can also create one right from inside the GPS, skipping the computer.
So, instead of navigating the GPS generated path from Point A to point B, you can now navigate the Route you have dictated. This is a bit more advanced than "Take me there" kind of navigation, but I like it a lot.
Can I get that feature on all my Garmin GPS units in a new software upgrade, please?
