Palm GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition Review

The Palm GPS Navigator is a good way to get navigation on an already strong platform, the Treo smartphone. The navigation is courtesy of TomTom and its knowledge around ease of use and sound navigation. So, no set-up is perfect, and having navigation with you in your smartphone is a good situation but the small screen can be a drag. The GPS capabilities are sound, and offer basic features, but not some of the more advanced features like text to speech. It does support multi-segment routing for going to several destinations that you select. The unit is fairly easy to set-up, and use, but its integration with other Palm software isn't so hot.
Craig Ellison of PC Mag was sorry to say that the unit can't access the phone function while navigating due to the limitations of the Palm OS only running one application at a time. This was compounded by the fact that after a call, it takes a while to re-start the application and reconnect with the bluetooth GPS receiver.
Overall, he says, "Overall, TomTom has done a good job of converting its popular TomTom interface and software to run on the Palm platform. Whether it's the right solution for you depends on how you use navigation software and whether you can live with the display limitations of the Treo."
