Three GPS Units on a Road Trip to Vermont

There's a fun comparison article in the NYTimes that you can take a look at to understand the strengths and weaknesses of a couple of GPS units. They take the Acura optional in-dash system ($3,500), a Verizon VZ Navigator service on an LG phone ($10/mo) or the Garmin C550 ($600). They took the three navigation systems with them on a trip to rural Vermont, where the cell signals fall off and thus the Verizon system fails, but they encounter some interesting situations that allow them to investigate the underbellies of all systems. In the end, they opt for the Garmin C550 portable system saying that they would buy a portable to move from car to car if they had to buy any of them. This fits my theory that says the car navigation systems will lag the portables for a long time as people don't want to pay outrageous prices for them and want to be able to use the system in the car of their choice.
