Geocaching with your Mobile Phone
Trimble announced that it has a new application for your mobile phone that will allow you to use the GPS-enabled phone for geocaching. While this is a nice move to involve those without a handheld device, it somehow sends the vision of a bunch of mobile phone talking idiots out there in the mud getting their italian loafers all dirty. Anyway, I suppose if you aren't cut out for walking in the woods, you wouldn't dream of trying it. This adds to Trimble's set of mobile phone based GPS programs including a training aid and an off-road navigation program.
"Geocaching is a high-tech game of seeking hidden treasures around the world with the use of a GPS-enabled device. The game previously required several time-consuming steps, such as downloading information from the Web, uploading coordinates, manually updating cache finds and tethering an expensive GPS device," said Larry Fox, business development manager, Trimble Outdoors. "Together with Groundspeak's global database, Trimble's Geocache Navigator offers the same high-tech treasure hunt, but with the added convenience and cost-effectiveness of automatically navigating and managing the geocaching experience from a GPS-enabled cell phone."
With the Geocache Navigator application, users have instant access to hundreds of thousands of caches nationwide. Leveraging Groundspeak's geocaching.com database, users can query and log caches anywhere in the U.S. From a GPS-enabled phone, treasure hunters seek caches using a uniquely constructed, radar-like interface that provides a clear perspective of the cache location with respect to the user. Additionally, screens on the cell phone provide standard compass, speed, heading, location, cache description, hints and other useful information for both the beginner and the expert geocacher.
"In this high-tech game of hide and seek, Trimble Outdoors and Groundspeak provide enthusiasts with a powerful and ultra-portable tool for geocaching anytime, and practically anywhere," said Jeremy Irish, president, Groundspeak. "Whether touring around the U.S. or at the local dog park with their family, Geocache Navigator enables users to enhance their active outdoor experiences with the flexibility and convenience of geocaching with their cell phones."
