Mio C310x - the upgrade to the Mio C310

MioC310GPS.JPG

Update: Mio Has Announced a Map Update for the Mio C310X! - 6/29/07

There has been a lot of traffic and news looking at the Black Friday GPS Deals that are coming the day after Thanksgiving, and well Black Friday is here. For breaking news and an update check out Black Friday GPS Mop Up - the Mio C310x Fest.

Update: See our Review of the new Mio C310x GPS
Update: I talked with Mio and got an update on Map fixes and more. See the post.

I used the Mio C310 back in the summer, and liked it a lot. This is not a low quality GPS; these folks are for real. (Read my Review on the Mio C310) I happen to be using the Mio H610 right now (been too busy to announce it), and it is using the Mio branded iGo navigation engine from PDAMill. I will say that I like it a lot, and that the interface is fairly clean and easy to navigate. From what I can remember and from what I can tell from using the Mio H610, I would say that this is a good improvement. Hardware is the same on the two; still SiRF star III chipset with a flat form factor and a decent touchscreen.

Update: I have posted my Review of the Mio H610, which uses the same basic navigation software as the new C310x. Check it out for insight into how this new software performs.

Here are some key changes that will help you compare the Mio C310 vs the Mio C310x:

  • The C310x uses Mio Map mapping software (a Mio-branded version of iGo)—bringing a completely different look & feel to the user interface. The C310x continues to use the same underlying Tele Atlas map database (not quite as good as the NAVTEQ; but getting better).
  • The C310x offers pre-loaded US maps (50 US States + Guam & Puerto Rico), with Canadian maps on an included DVD (We now know that these Canadian maps are not there.
  • The C310x still offers an MP3 player, which can play while navigating
  • The C310x software supports additional viewing modes (horizon tilt, zoom & pan while in 3D mode), pedestrian navigation mode, as well as other UI customization options
  • The Mio C310x does omit the A/C charger in the box, and you’ll have to decide if it’s a big loss. A lot of people who bought the Mio C310X got an AC charger. The data from Mio is mixed if the Mio C310x is supposed to have an AC charger.

CompUSA will be open at 9pm on Thanksgiving day and should have the C310x on sale for $179. I have talked to them and they WILL price match the Black Friday ad for CC or Staples. If you're wanting to hit other stores Fri morning, this may be the deal for you.

News on Maps and the question around upgrading of Mio C310x maps:

I talked to Mio and found out that when you register your new Mio GPS you will get an email 6-9 months from now, when new maps are ready, notifying you that there is a map upgrade available. You will then go to their website to download it for free.

Any upgrades after that time will be done through iGo, and you will need to pay for it. Typically in the industry these prices are around $100. I don't have a figure on the map upgrades for 18+ months right now, so that's a guess.

Just printed out the spec sheet for the Mio C310x, and it shows an AC adapter as being included in the box. Check out their website, and click on product info sheet, then go all the way to the bottom of page 2. I'm going for the Black Friday deal!

If one is expecting CompUSA to honor their price match policy, please verify with your local store that they will do so. I checked yesterday with a local manager who said "I haven't heard anything about that." (After I asked about them matching price on Thanksgiving day for items for sale elsewhere on Friday).

Also, I emailed CompUSA & got this:

Thank you for contacting CompUSA. Below is our corporate pricing
    policy:

We'll match any local retail competitor's advertised price on every
technology product we sell, either at the time of purchase or within the
following 21 days. Our low price commitment covers all new, factory
sealed products of the same brand and model number that are available, and
in stock, at any local retail store. Our commitment does not apply to
Internet offers or any one-of-a-kind or other limited-quantity offers,
discontinued or close out items, refurbished products, trade-in sales,
    or special financing.

    Thank you,

This policy seems to be written to exclude "Limited Quantity Offers" which one might understand is a Black Friday deal.....

I wonder if this unit is manufactured by MyGuide: http://www.myguidegps.com/. MyGuide 3050 (US version of 3000) that I tried a couple of months ago looks very similar to C310x.

I had to send the MyGuide unit back because the software was cute, but buggy and routing was just awful. And I mean really, really awful. It would add turns for no reason whatsoever, nag about U-Turns instead of suggesting to turn at the next street, ignore a freeway on-ramp along the way (present on the map!) and instead suggest driving past, making a u-turn and entering from the opposite direction, and much more. I needed to take freeway 410 in Toronto once, and all I needed to do was drive about 10 miles and exit (which is what Google Maps and all other GPS software that I tried suggested). 410 has express lanes and local lanes. The route suggested by MyGuide had me switch between express and local at *every* opportunity - 4 times along the 10 mile drive - for no reason.

The unit had a bunch of other problems, like a clock that reset itself every time the unit was turned off, but routing is what made me send it back. In the end, even though MP3 and video player features were nice, the unit failed to do its primary function, which is to provide a relaible, efficient routing.

C310x "upgraded" software looks eerly similar to the one used by MyGuide. Check the return policy before buying.

Posted by: legalalien at November 22, 2006 5:37 PM

When using the C310x and one misses a street, does the C310X unit automatically re-computes a new path like the Garmin 350 does or, does this C310X tells you to make a "U" turn and go back to where you missed the turn, like the earlier C310 was doing.
    Thank You

Posted by: anorov at November 23, 2006 9:15 AM

    Anorov,

I don't know for sure, but in the H610 you can de-select the "U-Turn" option. So, it will not tell you to do a UTurn, but it will route you "oddly" to get you to go back; like 3 left turns or something until it realizes that there is a better route going forward.

Does it support chinese in the setting?

I'm planing to bring it abroad once in a while. I definitely want to know how easy it will be to install other countrys maps, such as China and Taiwan. Do they included in the CD?

Posted by: Chris at November 23, 2006 12:02 PM

I was playing around with a C310x at CC last night just to check them out. You definitely could turn off the U-Turn option off.

I'm still not sure if I should try to go to CompUSA tonight, or to go to Staples in the morning.

Posted by: Steve at November 23, 2006 4:02 PM

    Chris,

I don't know for sure, but I would imagine not. I don't know what to say, as a quick look at Garmin.com doesn't show Asian maps.

I got one of these GPS units at my local Comp USA (was the second-to-last person to get one!), and they would not price match, even thought I had the ad in hand.

Posted by: Kevin at November 24, 2006 12:09 AM

    GOOD LUCK with CompUSA.

I just wasted 3 hours of my life which I'll never get back again in their store. When I asked about the mio c310x there were only TWO left. They put my name on a piece of paper and taped it to the front of the box, assuring me it would be waiting for me in the front of the store when I got to the registers. That was at 10:30pm.

I arrived at the front of the line at 1:15am to find that one of the MANAGERS had actually given it to someone else! Of course, this manager had already left the store, leaving the other manager to try and explain to me why I'd waited for 2.5 hours in a line for an item which I saw with my own eyes, but which had been just given to someone else!

I am now going to try getting to Circuit City at 4:30am in the hopes that I'll get one of theirs. The idiot manager at CompUSA was not apologetic, but threw it back at me, saying, "What am I supposed to do? The item isn't here. I'm offering to try and get one for you, but if you want to just walk out, I can't help you." (I'd made no threats that I was going to walk out. I was actually in this for the long haul and hoping he'd look in the back, call another store, or at least be apologetic.)

CompUSA continues to be my least favorite store to shop at in my area. The people who work there look like high school dropouts, have NO sense of urgency, and the place always looks like a garage sale. Items are not organized, prices aren't all that competitive (except on Black Friday), and the people aren't friendly.

SO, if you're planning on trying to get one of these at CompUSA, they're probably already gone. Take your money and your business elsewhere. These people are dolts.

Thanks for letting me vent. I feel much better now. And I look forward to reporting back on the Mio c310x and it's performance!

    Scott,

FYI - You stated that US maps were preloaded with maps of Canada on the DVD for the C310x. I just picked one up this mornig at Staples (my first BF shopping trip!!) and I can't find the Canadian maps. I've left a question using the online form on Mio's website and will try to call the toll free number when they open. Any comments?

Posted by: Marc at November 24, 2006 8:36 AM

    Marc,

That's a concern. This info came straight from a Mio Rep. I will check into it.

I will say that they expected NOT to have an AC adapter in the box, but the one I bought has one in it. Um, how about you take an AC adapter instead of the Canadian maps? Just kidding.

I'll look into it, and will get back to you; but don't expect anything before next week when my contact for Mio is back at work.

Posted by: Scott at November 24, 2006 8:48 AM

    Scott,

Thanks for all the great info.

I just tried to get the C310X at Circuit City at 5AM today, Black Friday, and I found that they only had 2 units for the dozen or so who showed up. Very dissapointing! You would think they would stock up for an advertised sale. They tried to push the Garmens instead. The old bait and switch. Hopefully the prices of these units will continue to drop, maybe after the holidays.

Again, thanks for all you do!

I just picked up the last MIO from my local Staples. Real;y cool. I had bought a RoadMate 800 from Frys but reruned it as too clunkly. The mio seems much moree user friendly and much quicker to grab a synch.

I have one question though. Does anyone know how to synch the Mio with Outlook?

I searched the user guide and the Mio support website, downloaded the new "Mio Transfer" update and still nothing.

    TIA,

    Jim

The spec sheet for the Canadian model, the C310s (at http://www.miogps.com/CA/products_C310s2_features.htm), states that it "also includes full U.S. roadmaps and Points of Interest on DVD". The spec sheet for the US model, the C310x (at http://www.miogps.com/US/products_c310xfeatures.htm), only mentions that the device "comes complete with preloaded maps of the entire US (Alaska & Hawaii included)" but says nothing about Canada.

Question - How do I quickly go to my current location on the GPS map screen? It's fine if you know your current address, but what happens if you don't?

I bought my unit at Circuit City this morning. They had 15 units with AC adapters, no Canadian maps. I got there at 3:45am.

Posted by: Jonathan at November 24, 2006 1:01 PM

I picked one up at Circuit City this morning. It opened at 5am adn I got there at 4:45. There was about 200 people in front of me. When I got back to the car stereo section there was a guy handing them out left and right. I don't know how many they had but it was at least 20-30. I saw several other people walking through the store with one.

Compusa refused my pricematch saying that on weekend after thanksgiving they do not pricematch. I spoke to a manager and that is what she said. My compusa was also very disorganized. Erik, I feel for you. They made me check out right away even though I had more shopping to do. They said they could not guarantee that I would get a Mio unless I checked out right away. I complained to the manager, telling him that they should put security devices on 'em and hand them out, that it isn't right to make people wait on line twice in order to check out once with the GPS and then again when they have done the rest of their shopping. That said, CompUSA had about 20-25 of them and Staples only had 5. I was one of the first 20 people into staples and there were really only 5 of them... So as disorganized as CompUSA was, at least they had stock.

i got one from compusa and i turned it on and nothing... i can download mp3's but i try to hit mio map and says no maps are loaded.. I even reloaded. is there a fix or something else i need to update or download from the site?

Posted by: chad at November 24, 2006 2:47 PM

I bough one last week and did a price match (exactly, return/rebuy) for $149.99 this morning. As Marc has mentioned, mine also includes AC charger but no Canada map. I would swap the AC charger for Canada map. Any one? :)

Posted by: Lamsao at November 24, 2006 3:51 PM

I picked one up from Staples this morning. FYI, it came with both AC and DC chargers.

Its interface is simple and effective. The maps render quickly and look great (nice anti-aliasing with the right amount of detail for zoom levels).

    Impressive little unit for $150.

Posted by: deslock at November 24, 2006 4:39 PM

Same here. I picked up a C310x from CompUSA last night. The package come wiht an AC adaptor but no Canadian map. I hope they will offer it for download or for a discounted price later.

I was at Circuit City at 4:30 and was behind at least 300 others who were waiting for the store to open. I missed the Mios but saw many of them being carried by people inside the store. I hurried off to Staples (15 minutes away) thinking "Who would be waiting for Staples to open?" It turns out about 80 people who arrived before I did! Staples had many of the units, which was true of their other advertised specials as well, and I was able to buy two Mios! They were very organized, the deals were great, and everything flowed smoothly. Next year I will return for Staple's Black Friday sales.

Posted by: CRay at November 24, 2006 7:18 PM

Sorry, just got to toss out my two cents.
I work at a CompUSA in MD, and I have to say, we had not as many problems as that Thursday evening. The Mio's sold smoothly, and the only real craziness was over the laptops. But please, if you had a bad experience at a store, check out the regional phone number for your area and make a call. Have the persons name and store location or number, and they will be written up if it can be shown that they were really inappropriate. And before you say it, yes I have seen two managers and others dressed down for mistreatment of customers. So please, let someone know!

Otherwise, I will say that I managed to get ahold of a C310X and it works great. Love the interface, and can't wait to get out and test it fully. While the deals may be over, my store had a few of the units left over even! Go figure huh?

Posted by: Jason at November 24, 2006 9:38 PM

I bought mine at Staples at 6:06am. I was shocked they were available as there had to be 300 people ahead of me. Staples also honored my $25 off $100 coupon from OfficeMax, so I got mine for $125!

I haven't opened mine yet, but I imagine it won't have Canada maps. I live an hour from Canada so that's a bummer. What is the Digital Rights Management situation with such maps?

Posted by: GeePeeEss at November 24, 2006 9:49 PM

I tried the GPS today. On most highway and "normal" local roads, it seems OK. However, when the car reached into the parking lot of some shopping mall, it just totally got crazy. In addition, the speed limit is outdated in some highways. The POI address also appeared to contain some error. In general, I think this unit is quite useful. But you cannot just totally relie on it to look for a particular location. It CAN get you to the surrounding area but you might be a few hundred meters off.

Posted by: Terence at November 24, 2006 9:54 PM

I am in the suburbs of Detroit and I picked mines up at Staples. Store opened at 6:00 am I got there at 4:30 am and was the 11th person in line got one with no problem in and out in less that 10min. They had allot at the Chesterfield store in Chesterfield MI. They might even still have some.

Posted by: Alex at November 25, 2006 2:25 AM

I bought a Mio C310x from Staples on Friday, and so far, it's working very well. The interface is a bit different to the Garmin that I'm familiar with, but that's a simple adjustment.

    Some concerns:
The maps are a little outdated; probably 2005 vintage. I thought the ones on the enclosed CD/DVD were newer so I downloaded them to my Mio. It appears there's not a lot of storage space for the map, as it had to remove the existing maps to put on those from the CD. It would be nice to be able to put maps on the SD card, but I believe the SD is just for the MP3 stuff. I look forward to some newer maps, however one goes about getting them.

Mio needs to get their website in order. I tried to register for Club Mio, and the site is down. The site to register products is down as well. Sites like GPS Lodge may the best avenue for communication.

I will use this unit a lot for business travel, and a removeable dash mount would be very useful. The Garmin has a 3 toed thingie that sits securely on the dash, and keeps the GPS off the windshield and out of driver's view. I'm even thinking of some sort of beanbag thingie to wrap around the Mio mounting post. We shall see.

I know this is a lot to ask of a $150 GPS, but I'd pay another $50-100 to get good support and function.

Just bought mine at Fry's for $149, but I have a question - anyone know where to get an external antenna for the unit?

Posted by: Todd at November 25, 2006 5:01 PM

I bought mine from Circuit City and the box says "1gb Extra Memory Free, for more maps and songs"

There was no SD card in the box and I'm not sure how to check onboard memory.

Posted by: Pete at November 25, 2006 10:10 PM

I got my Mio C310x from Staples. I also did not see the Canada map on the DVD disk. However, this is not the major problem I have with my unit. My C310x just can not get the GPS signal without me toggle the on-off button at the bottom of the unit. If I turn it off using the side switch and turn it on later on. I will not get the GPS signal at all even I wait for 10 minutes. Anyone has the same experience?

Posted by: Eric at November 25, 2006 11:12 PM

I bought mine on Friday at Circuit City, they had 45 of them. I went to hardwire it in my car today with an external antenna thinking it was standard like every other GPS(Garmin, Magellan, TomTom, Sony), but of course it wasn't. Well i ended up mounting it in my center dash cubby on my expedition and hardwired it and the thing GETS a SIGNAL down THERE! Accuracy is at .6-.8m, i cannot beleive this! It is aqcuiring 10 satellites from the center console! If you still want an external antenna they are on ebay for about $15 plus shipping. Oh and if someone finds out how to update the maps sooner please post! My house is a big black spot with no roads around!

Posted by: Eddie at November 25, 2006 11:59 PM

Oh and has anyone figured out how to get the dam thing to power down when you shut the car off, and power on when u start the car?

Posted by: Eddie at November 26, 2006 12:00 AM

I missed the BF deals on this unit, I refused to wait on lines all night and assumed that they would be quickly gone. In today's newspaper Circuit City advertised a saturday only sale for $199-. So I was the first one at Cicuit City today, and they had none. They checked every CC in town and everyone was sold out. Another typical "advertise what you don't have" sale at CC. I called Staples, they had none. I called CompUsa online and they told me there were none in Miami. But, I decided to call the local CompUsa store and the manager found 1 and gave me the $199 CC price. (I guess that means I could have liesurely gone to CompUsa last night and paid less, Oh well!) I tried the unit out tonight and it seems well worth the money. However, I too would like to get the Canadian map. Maybe when these maps are updated at a later date, they will include the map of Canada, if enough of us gripe about it when we call them.

According to documentation on Mio's website, the c310x unit only comes with US maps and only has 1gb of storage (compared to the 2gb of the C310)

    http://www.miogps.com/US/images/readme/C310xUS.pdf

Posted by: Nick at November 26, 2006 1:21 PM

I finally got this at Compusa on Sunday for $199 (no rebate) after a HORRIBLE Thanksgiving night experience. It was the most disorganized mess I'd ever seen. There were 200 people mobbed around a counter WAITING for the clerks to get the stock of about 15 units. When they came, the clerks were randomly giving them out, clearly enjoying the power trip as we stood there with arms outstretched like monkeys begging for food. Are you reading this COMPUSA CORPORATE? This was your Totowa, New Jersey store. Sunday morning, I got there 2 hours before the store opened and was first in line to get one of the six. As the manager was going into the store, I asked him to please give out vouchers this time. They redeemed themselves by letting the first 6 people in the store first to get the units. Enough about this terrible store.
I opened it in my car in the parking lot and spent all of 5 minutes setting it up. I was amazed at how small it was. I had expected it to be a lot bigger. Also impressive was the turn prompting. The default U.S. voice, Jason, is very clear and pleasant. They give you enough time to prepare for turns, with multiple prompts and a clear 3D display that sharpens and zooms as you get close. I've used TomTom Navigator on my Palm Treo since it came out (end of 2005). I have to say that the interface is much better. I had gotten used to the cold, strictness of my TomTom voice, Richard, and didn't realize that a voice could be clear concise, and Pleasant! My only wish is that the graphics were a little sharper and less cartoony. I wanted a dedicated GPS because I would loose the TomTom guidance every time a call came in. I had to drive to 2 unknown addresses 30 miles away, and had written instructions. The unit got me there flawlessly. Then I punched in POI and found the nearest diner for breakfast.
For $200, I just love this unit. One note is that you need to spend some time studying the manuals on the CD, and playing with the options on the unit. Something that was not obvious was how to save "favorites". I finally figured out that you need to create a custom POI folder.
The MP3 player is fair. With headphones, there is barely enough volume, but it sounded fine when I plugged it into my cassette adapter. A shame because I would have liked to use this as an IPOD substitute. Don't expect too much from this feature.
Overall, I've spent a few hours playing with this, and am extremely satisfied. If it goes on sale for the same price, I'll try to get another to give as a gift.
Thanks to everyone else on this list for previous input.

My experience in getting my Mio was very pleasant. I got to the local Staples at 5:00AM Friday. Only four others there when I arrived. I had gone to get the laptop they had on sale but figured for $150, what the heck. The store had 15 units and they went pretty quick.

In the limited time I have had to play with the unit I find it is very easy to use and the GPS signal location is awesome. As I am writing this I can see I have 7 satellites locked on while sitting in the living room in the middle of my house! This thing is incredible.

If you didn't get one of these, do yourself a favor and look hard for one. You won't be disappointed. Now I am looking at the modifications that can be done to use the unit as a PDA and video player. This could be one fascinating device!

Ran into my first issue with the 310x. It would not recalcuate a route because it did not recognize a major road and tried to have my turn around on a bridge. Once i got over the bridge it found the right way and guided me. I have to say that I am not willing to trust this as much as my garmin quest..hopefully there will be some major map upgrade.

Has anyone tried using the Mio C310x for geocaching? I tried it out but could not get the reading to get me any closer than 25-50 feet... and had to switch back and forth between screens and both gave me a different reading.

Can anyone help me figure this thing out?

As a Navagation Unit while driving, this thing is awesome.

Daniel? Did you get help with your "no maps" problem yet?

I had exactly the same problem. I got help from another thread - hopefully you can try it.

Use the Mio CD to Restore MioMapV3.2 Software option, then Transmit Maps option to the 310. Good luck! I had 48 very frustrating hours until someone gave me this advice, and now I'm happy.

I'd be happier if someone could tell me how to add Contacts so I can put people and places into my POI's.

    Anyone?

So I finally get the Canada map into the GPS. I played with it today and setup a route from East Toronto to Mississauga. legalalien was absolutely right. The GPS asked me to go from collector to expressa, and back and forth for a few times for no reason. I cannot say it is wrong as this route DOES allow me to reach my destination in similar time. It will drive you crazy though when you try to switch lane 10+ times when other drivers are going 130km/h+ around you. However for 179+tax I would say it's acceptable.

"News on Maps and the question around upgrading of Mio C310x maps:

I talked to Mio and found out that when you register your new Mio GPS you will get an email 6-9 months from now, when new maps are ready, notifying you that there is a map upgrade available. You will then go to their website to download it for free.

Any upgrades after that time will be done through iGo, and you will need to pay for it. Typically in the industry these prices are around $100. I don't have a figure on the map upgrades for 18+ months right now, so that's a guess.

    -Scott"

I am curious when you say you called them, did you call Mio or Tele-Atlas phone numbers? If so what are the phone numbers for each company?

Also when you register at the Mio website at

    http://club.miogps.com/mio/M100/Register_1.jsp

do you select Club Mio Member or Club Mio VIP Member. Also I noticed when you have to select the "Product Model You Purchased" it only has "C310" and "C310S" but no C310X. What did you do when you registered?

The only thing I am not happy with the Mio is that the maps are really outdated and some POI's don't exist(e.g. for gas stations, they don't have POI's for Shell and Mobil gas which are really common in the US)

Posted by: bob at November 28, 2006 12:37 PM

Has anyone tried registering this product online. It doesn't list the c310x as a product choice. It only has the c310 and the c310s. How have you registered these?

Posted by: Jeff at November 28, 2006 2:19 PM

Does ANYONE know how to remedy this?

My SD card slot stopped working. I have done a hard and soft reboot. In fact, multiple times, but the GPS no longer recognizes the SD card. I can put it in and take it out while the thing is on. When I first got it (on BLACK Friday) it worked as expected, but...

    What is one to do?

Posted by: eric at November 28, 2006 6:10 PM

I discovered that the registration site

    http://club.miogps.com/mio/M100/Register_1.jsp

does not work correctly with Firefox. The date field can be filled in if you use Explorer.

I got my 310x at Staples for $149, yippie! I was the 1st one in line since my town is pretty small.

From the above posts, I am also having issues with the c310x routing. The unit seems to be everything I would want in a GPS, but for routing purposes, the unit insists on routing me through what is clearly "the longer and least efficient" route.

After playing with the setting for hours, I am still being told to travel on roads having many stop lights and through congested towns [instead of well known roads which contain no traffic and no stop lights].

Also, selecting road avoidance in a planned route is a pain since you have to scroll all the way through the route plan and then the unit winds up routing you through even stranger roads. I suspect I will only have a use for this unit in absolutely unknown areas where I only care about getting from A to B.

For $150 I can't really complain, but I hope the next software rev fixes these issues, cuz the unit routing software is not the greatest.

My next test is to select a different vehicle like a "truck" instead of a "car". Maybe then the unit will try and keep me out of side roads and minimize the strange routing.

    F.

There is a hack also that supposedly sets routing to option of EASY - which sticks more to main highways. I believe it is the fatwallet site that had all the info.

I bought the product the Sunday after BF on Staples website, for $200 including free delivery. I got it on Tuesday and love it. It's my first GPS and does a nice job of trying to reroute when you take a route other than the one it proposes. The sound is loud and clear. The graphics are fine. The menuing system is pretty bad though, but once you read the manual and start using it for awhile it becomes pretty easy.

I have one major issue (other than somewhat incorrect maps) that I've been trying to resolve. In the manual on page 17 it talks about importing contacts into the POI from the 310's "Contacts database". I don't see any other references to a "Contacts database" or importing data, nor do I see anyway to get data from Outlook into the POI (except for hacking the unit).

Does anyone have any knowledge about getting "Contacts" into the C310X other than adding just the address into the POI database directly?

    Thanks ... Jeff

Hi all, I am travelling to China soon. Are there any Chinese maps for Mio 310x? Any pointers or help is greatly appreciated!

Posted by: GradStudent at December 4, 2006 1:28 PM

I'm having issues with my mio. Please keep in mind that I am new to GPS. This is my first unit and so I have nothing to compare it to. I would like to know if some of my issues are typical or not. First of all, it does not send me on the fastest route. If I look up how to get somewhere on yahoo or google maps, the mio will send me in a different, slightly longer way. Is this normal? That's a minor issue I am having with it. The major issue, is that I was downtown last week and it was telling me the wrong roads. Like I was on one road and it would tell me I was on a different, perpendicular road (NOT parallel). It was bizarre. It also kept losing its signal so I could not figure out where to go. When it reacquired the signal the roads were still all wrong. It was completely unhelpful. Also, sometimes when I get into my car and turn on the device it does not acquire a signal. That is, I drive to my destination using the GPS. I turn off the device using the button on the side. When I turn it back on, there is no satellite coverage. I am not talking about when there are skyscrapers surrounding me. There were (one story) restaurants around me. And it still couldn't pick up a signal. I had to drive for a block or two before it picked up a signal. Is this normal? Do anyone else have this problem?

Got my Mio 310x from Fry's Electronics in Burbank,California for $148.00 plus $5.00 for an extended 3-yr in house warranty(which i may not end up using) the morning after thanksgiving.I was actually aiming for the $372.00 laptop that ran out of stock before people could get them.

This thing works like a horse considering the lowest price in the market for portable car navigation when i got it. The only thing that annoys me about Mio 310x is that it cannot name the streets in my community considering that where i live was built more than 3 years ago. OK, the streets are there (LIVE!) but it doesn't have a name on it. I live in Westridge in Valencia,CA.

Mio should post a MAP update soon before the end users declares World War III !!!! MIO DO YOUR JOB or Better Buisness Bureau will knock on your door... thanks!

I already own a 310. Anyone know if there will be an opportunity to upgrade the software to a 310x?

    Thanks.

I'm also wondering, like Jmooorash, if anyone uses the C310X for geocaching? I'm having trouble with the coordinates--the readings seem to change and I can't get close to the cache.

Posted by: Peter at December 28, 2006 5:26 PM

To answer a couple questions, I've been using my C310X for four days. With regards to not choosing the fastest route, you need to change your settings in the route to fastest. It should also remember that you do not want to take a road if you choose the "avoid" option. With regards to not picking up a signal for a couple blocks around one-story buildings, by turning it off with the slider on the bottom of the unit, you are truly powering it off which turns the unit completely off. If you were to just power it off with the power button on the side, it would pick up satellites much quicker. And in fact, a couple blocks isn't bad for picking up a signal, my Garmin eTrex would take up to 2 minutes to pick up the same signal. Contacts: it's my understanding this was an option on the C310, but not the C310X. Your guess is as good as mine why they would eliminate a great option like this one. If you look at the back of the unit though, it does say C310, not C310X. A little bizarre. For my $198, I don't think that you can beat this thing. My brother in law bought 7 of them. Hope this helps.

Bought mine on Black Friday, worked great until today... 72 days later... Unit is fine except i cannot get a signal anywhere, 0 sats... i hope RMA goes well.

MY 310X IS NEW 1ST ONE. BUT SOME OF THE DISTANCES ARE OFF LIKE BURGER KING IS ON 1.0 MILES FROM ME AND IT SAYS 6.0 MILES. AND IF I TYPE IN THE ADDRESSE FOR BURGER KING IT GIVES ME THE RIGHT BUSSINESS BUT STILL SAYS ITS 6.0 MILES AWAY. AND DO I HAVE TO LOAD THE MAPS FROM THE DISC ARE THEY ALREADY ON IT? ARE THE MAPS ON THE DISC DIFFERENT FROM THOSE THAT ARE ALREADY ON IT? THANKX

I've got the 310 version and the 310x series sounds great. Does anyone know of a good workaround to hack the 310 to the 310x software level?

Just spoke with a MioTech Cust. service rep.

The test version of the updated US maps have a glitch hence the delayed release. It's expected to be released aroung June 20, 2007 on a DVD.

    Don't know the pricing yet!

The Canadian map update is also expected to be released Later (~2months?) after the US map update release but will need to be put on the SD card!!

It's Terrible how it's NOT integrated with the US Maps as a combined North American map like the Navteq North American map!!

Do you, by chance, know if they will update the software together with the map updates (for example including TTS)?

The map on C310X is outdate. Even with the newermaps. Google for Tom Tom on c310x.
Hack it and run TomTom programs with new tomtom maps.
