Mio C310x – Canadian Maps, Hacks and More….

With upwards to 100,000 Mio C310x units sold this past weekend, there has been a lot of traffic and questions about the Mio C310x, covering Canadian maps, adding video playback support, adding other voices, accessing the Windows CE core, and just plain digging like people have fun doing. I thought I would pass this along, but I haven’t done any of this, and you’re on your own to play; I can’t help you here.

Update: Mio Has Announced a Map Update for the Mio C310X! - 6/29/07

Update: See our Review of the new Mio C310x GPS
Update: I talked with Mio and got an update on Map fixes and more. See the post.

Maps of Canada
Update: some things have been updated, and there is an easy way to add the Canadian maps to an SD card.
Essentially you need to get (?steal; I don't know here?) the map file from another place on the internet, and then place it on an SD card (the file is about 54MB; need a 64MB+ sized card) in a specific directory structure. See the Fat Wallet Forums link below.

New Voices
Similar thing here. Get the voice files, use a hack to drop it into the right file folder on the Mio.

Adding video and more…. All similar processes.

I haven’t done any of this, so you’re on your own. I know some people who have commented here about the unit have done this with some success. You’re on your own, good luck.

Nice quick summary on the front page of what you can do: Read this thread at the FatWallet forums for news on Hacking the Mio C310x.

Can someone point me to where to get the Canada maps for a MIO C310x purchased in the USA? I know there was a USA Map update over this past summer but no Canadian maps were included...

After installing the official firmware and map updates, the canada.fbl shows as locked. (It worked fine before.)
Just a warning before you fork the $15 and do it yourselves.
Would love to hear if there are workarounds.

How to get a Mio GPS with US, Canada and Mexico maps:

Buy the Mio C510 in Mexico, but it costs around $500-$550.

Check out: www.DestinoGPS.com (in Spanish)

I visited their kiosk in a Mexico City shopping center, and the very helpful salesperson swapped my C310 SD card with that of a C510, but unfortunately it didn't work, even after a soft reset.

The salesperson then suggested that I see their technician at their main office nearby, but I ran out of time.

I believe that they are using their "Destinator" software.

Does anyone have a mexico.fbl file?

Regards, Frits

I was searching through your site earlier today for how to get canada.fbl file onto my mio 310x and found the following:
download canada.fbl from vallian.foles-upload.com/files/74827/canada.fbl
install on sd card in maps directory
load into mio and soft reset
works great, thanks

Same problem as santiba, I've got a Mio 268 and maps that I've added to the correct map folder but on start up the unit says that some maps are locked. When I sort through the buttons to change the country no other countries are shown in the list so only the Aus maps are able to be displayed. Anyone out there know how to unlock maps that are added to the SD card?

Sorry, I ment santiba in stead of Gene Thomas.

@Gene Thomas:
Did you managed to unlock the maps?

Posted by: thomast at June 12, 2007 7:20 AM

For people having problem accessing the Canadian map with SD card. go to address, then in the top right corner there is a button called "other city" click on it. on the next screen, click on the button "change state" on the top right corner. On the next screen click on the top right corner button "change country" now you should see both usa and canada listed.

I downloaded an Italy map (*.fbl) from the web and put it in a SD card under the folder /MioMap/Maps.
When I placed the card in the C310 and turned it on, it displayed that "some of the maps were locked", and I couldn't access the Italian map (it displayed with a KEY figure, as locked).

How can I unlock it?

I have tried twice to sync about 1 GB of MP3 files from my PC to a 2GB PNY SD memory card, loaded in the Mio C310x, using the Mio Transfer program. It am only able to transfer about 424 MB, then I get an error message that the synchronization has failed, saying I should check the USB connection or the memory card. I'm perplexed. What's going on? Could it be possible that both of these 2GB PNY memory cards are unable to hold more than 424 MB? Even if I take the card out of the Mio, put it in a card reader, then try to copy more files from my PC, any type, it still will not allow it. WHY?? HELP Please.

Thanks
Gene

How do I easily get the C310 unit to change from routing to just navigating? Also, my map shows county road number names instead of the actual road names in rural areas. Can that be fixed?

How to get the Canada map for the Mio C310:

Buy it in Canada and get the CD with all US and Canada maps.

Currently (end Dec. 2006) the C310 sells for 230 CAD (~200 USD) at Staples online.

Bought a Polaroid/PNY 2GB SD card for 35 USD at Circuit City.

Mio Transfer Map on included Mio DigiWalker CD presently can only be used to transfer maps to C310 and not to SD card in Mio C310.

Mio tech support were aware of the problem and advised me to use Mio Transfer program to transfer maps from CD to a hard drive directory, and then transfer them from the hard drive to a directory Miomap/maps that you need to create on the SD card.

C310 does not seem to be able to access maps from both the internal memory and the SD card at the same time.

Therefore, I copied all the maps on the SD card and have 0.9 GB left. Apparently you can use up to a 4 GB SD card, but no high capacity (HC: see Mio FAQ).

I have Canada, US major road, and NE USA in internal memory which is maxed out.

Very happy with C310 but had one bad experience where I was being instructed to go the wrong way onto the service road at the Mall of the Mainland, Texas City, TX.

Now what I am looking for is a map of Mexico, and eventually updates of the other maps at low cost...

Good luck, Frits

I downloaded the Canada.fbl onto a 128MB SD Card. When I put it into the SD/MMC Slot in the Mio C310x, and did first a soft reset and then a hard reset, the unit did not recognize the Chip. Has anyone any other ideas as to how we can get the Canada map on the C310x?

Thanks!
Vic

Hi,
I put canada.fbl in the sub-dir as you recommended, it did not recognize anything related to Canada, I don't think it found the map file, I tried hard/sort reset, is there something else I missed ?

Thanks!
K.

Yes, just put the map in \miomap\maps on the SD card and put it in the Mio and you that's it, you now have Canada map.

You MAY have to soft reset the Mio to get it to recognize the SD card.

Posted by: Space at December 1, 2006 5:13 AM

I thought you could just put the Can map on the SD card and the Mio would pick it up? From one of the forums:

"You can run the maps off of SD cards by making the \miomap\maps directory on the SD card. Otherwise you have to use regedit (in the tools directory after unlocking) to modify your unit as posted elsewhere to run maps anywhere off the SD card. "

It looked like from that post that as long as you use the correct directory structure your fine??
