I had the opportunity to talk with Mio the other day in a wide-ranging conversation that helped me understand a lot about where things are at with the Mio C310x and where they are going with some of the key concerns that I (and a lot of my readers) have about the unit. Specifically, I spoke with the product manager Isabella Hoogland at Mio. The bottom line is that I get the sense that they are working hard to fix outages and make sure that their new found popularity is a positive experience for their customers. They have added support people to help handle the surge of comment and questions, and are dealing with some big issues head-on.
Over the last six months or so, Mio has been working with retail partners to make the Black Friday and ensuing deals a kind of coming out type occasion for the company. Recent NPD share numbers has them growing from a 0% share of the GPS market to 22% of the market in November. Not a bad little move in a highly competitive category. Some detractors complain that the market share was “bought”, and yes there are some sacrifices that were made, but the bottom line is that they pulled off a pretty big feat. For the most part, they seem to be delivering; many users that I have heard from are happy with the value that they bought at these price points. Now it’s time to fix some outages.
Map Issues – The current outages with TeleAtlas map data appears to be in the final throws of life, as Mio is racing to get new map data released. Again I get the sense that TeleAtlas is improving at a fast rate; which is good (see my post on why I previously thought that TeleAtlas was improving). TeleAtlas has already gotten new and improved map data to Mio, and Mio is going through their own quality review steps. New US maps should be released to the public later in the first quarter of 2007. Because of the size of the files (upwards to 1GB), there will need to be careful consideration given to the distribution channel. So, expect some type of mail based DVD type distribution. Price? Well, let’s say that it will be anywhere up to market rate, which could mean over $100. Previously I reported that these would be free. That was based on a conversation I had with Tech Support. They were not correct and for now this is not the case, as the plans are still being worked. I get the sense that they are trying to do right by the consumer, that they recognize the opportunity presented to them at this moment, and right now the price has not been set. (i.e. No decision has been made.) If anyone tells you differently, they are wrong.
Routing Issues – There have been two issues brought to my attention. 1) Routing issues around Washington DC that has the Mio 310x skipping a bridge that it thinks isn’t routable, and 2) That the Mio C310x has sporadic issues when routing from one limited access road to another and tells you to exit one way and then make a U-Turn to go in the correct direction. Both of these types of issues will be covered in software updates that will be released as needed with a patch to fix the issues. As I understand the fix for the Washington DC issue should be coming soon, and to watch the Mio Support pages for an update. If you have an issue like #2 above, post a comment here with very specific details about what road and direction you were going and what the Mio C310x told you to do. It sounds like there are a few issues that are hard to track down, so your help with actual data will be a step in the right direction.
Other information:
The mysterious Mio C310x 2GB model – Mio launched a 2GB model into the market to make some news as part of the unit’s debut. It sounds like it made some confusion in the market after the fact, and it will be 1GB of internal memory going forward.
AC Adapter – For those of you who got an AC adapter, you got lucky. There will NOT be an AC adapter in the box going forward (as indicated on the box). Again, I don’t think that this is a huge deal, as I use and charge mine in the car with the 12 volt charger that is included. This shouldn’t be a deal breaker.
TMC Traffic in the Mio C310x – sorry on this one, but the Mio C310x is a value product, and there are no plans to launch traffic capabilities on the C310x. If you want TMC traffic capabilities, you’ll need to move up the line to the Mio C710. Also, I get the sense that this feature will be in more and more GPS units, from most GPS manufacturers, not just Mio, as this feature will start to gain momentum when word of mouth powers the potential for the benefits.
Euro Maps – Some people have asked me about European maps for the Mio C310x, and Mio plans on releasing these in the New Year. My thought is that they would do it like it is done at their European site, either with a DVD or an SD card for sale. Expect the cost to be at “market rate” levels, and in the first half of the year, not right away in January.
More Mio C310x units - New shipments of the Mio C310x are arriving at stores, so expect some unit availability between now and Christmas.
Finally, Mio was silent when asked about what kind of future products we can expect out of them and when, but like most GPS manufacturers, I would expect Mio to announce new and better products at the CES show in January 2007. This has been Mio’s coming out, and if they play their cards right, they can start to introduce new product models into the marketplace with brand recognition and a reception that they didn’t have before November.
Thanks for all the Mio 310x news! I'm quite happy with the unit myself but am also anxious to get updated maps and POIs. Did they mention that the update in the 1st quarter of 2007 was free or not if you registered?
Posted by: fizzerfitzers at December 18, 2006 8:12 AM
Thanks for the info. Found the article a good read.
I have had only two or three small issues with the routing (like cut through a parking lot ).
On the map update issue, I assumed that they were not going to give a free update. Who knows how many they sold. Especially, with the cut rate price that they are selling at.
As TMC Traffic, I am just as satisfied without it. If I was spending $400, I would expect it.
But for $150, I am happy it works as good as it does. Quirks and all.

So if I were to get one RIGHT NOW. NEW. Would it have 2005 maps or Aug 2006 maps? I know I'm not the only one interested in this.
Posted by: Kevin at December 18, 2006 4:45 PM
Right Now, you would get the old maps in a Mio C310x. As of last week, the map data was being reviewed by Mio technical staff, so it is no where near getting in the unit itself yet.
The new maps should be available in the first quarter as downloads, but I would imagine about the same time that they would start showing up on the unit themselves. Just think about the logistics of moving the units through and I would expect taht it would take a while to get the software loaded, and then all of the inventory (with old maps) through the pipeline.
Seems like most people don't notice much of a difference, if any.
I think, depending on the area, new maps might not include much more at all. You'd hope that POIs would be updated, but there's really know way to know.
I'd be pretty upset if I paid $50 for a map update and didn't notice any difference at all.
Posted by: LexLuthor at December 18, 2006 8:05 PM
Regarding Lex's comments, you can go to the TeleAtlas website, and check their maps to see if updates to your area have been made. If not, you can fill out a form, and let them know of new roads or changes. My parents' street is not on my Mio now, but does show up on their website. The street is about 2 years old.

How about Canadian maps? Is there any chance the DVD update will include them?
Posted by: Jim Mahoney at December 19, 2006 2:34 PM
Thanks Scott. So if the new maps aren't going to be free, I wonder if we're still going to see the C310x for the same prices we're seeing now when they do start shipping with them preloaded. If so, it would definitely be worth waiting to purchase one. It will be interesting to see how MIO plays it.
Posted by: Kevin at December 19, 2006 3:06 PM
Regarding the TeleAtlas maps, I just purchased a C310x from Staples on 12/17 for $199 (on sale this week), and it does have August 2006 maps installed. Is this not what everyone else received with BF sales? I am very happy with it so far, as long as it doesn't break or quit working with in a couple years. I missed the BF sale, but it's still a good deal at anything under $299.
Posted by: JohnB at December 19, 2006 4:08 PM
Scott, could I ask you a mio GPS question?
When I get back in my car, after having it off for a bit, it starts giving me directions that I had in it previously. It's like I'd like to just delete what it was doing and start anew. I know I can put in a new POI or something, but I just want it to show my location and not keep telling me...'Wrong turn. Recalculating...blah blah.'
Any idea how to just tell it to stop and patiently wait for me to figure out where I want to go next?
Posted by: vijay at December 19, 2006 6:34 PM
Vijay -
Click on the Menu Button, and then on the little "route" looking icon at the bottom. You'll see an option to delete the route; click it. Then click "yes" to confirm. It will stop navigating to the last destination.
Kevin -
I would expect that the updated maps ON the unit will cost the same as the unit does today. So, Mio will pay a fee to TeleAtlas per unit for the maps. That should not change dramatically from year to year, so I would not expect this to be a big factor in the price of the unit..... So, yes, the unit would be coming with the new maps sometime in the Spring (my pure guess), and you'd be able to buy it with them already loaded. My expectation is that this unit will come priced at $299+ everyday, but will be offered on sales at discounted prices a couple of times per year. The next big "season" for GPS units is in time for the summer. I would expect news at that time: Price reductions, new units hit the shelves etc. This happened in 2006, and there is no reason for it not to happen again this year. This is a general statement that would apply to the GPS category; I have no knowledge of any plans anywhere to have such sales.
Hope this helps.

Scott,
I bought a 310x during the BF sales. If I am using the MP3 and navigation at the same time, when it gives a direction for the first time in say 10 mins or so, the current playing song skips to the next one. I have had this happen multiple times and on different songs. I am wondering if anyone else has seen it.
Is there a quicker way to get to the MP3 page without shutting down navigation?
Thanks

Do you know if Mio will include the Canadian Maps with the US maps or will it be separate?
I know that Garmin includes the Canadian map in the City Navigator CD that I use for my aging Garmin StreetPilot III which I just received the current update, v.8.
Thanks.

Does anyone else who uses the 310x find it is constantly 10-20 yards off. For instance if I arive at my POI or address it will show the POI or address to be another 10-20 yards down the road. Or if slowing to turn at an intersection I'll watch the yards count down to 10 or so and I'll have to turn before or else end up on the other side of the road.
Seems like it needs to be calibrated or ??? Has anyone found a way of doing this minor recalibration?

Hi,
Can you tell me how to determine the battery life (the amount of time available before charging) of the Mio?
How can you delete just 1destination without deleting all of them.
Thanks,

I just bought the c310x and generally like it but have found a couple of glitches. The first is that it thinks my home address is about 70 YDS beyond where it really is..this is minor. The second issue is far more major and scares me a bit. I tried to map a route to Denver International Airport (a major facility) and the c310x wants to take me over unauthorized service roads and finally tells me the airport is "unreachable". Any thoughts on whether this is something that they will correct with the fixes they've told you are in the works?

I just bought a c310x and don't know what year the maps are from (v3.2).I do know that there are a lot of new streets missing on the maps.I have also noticed that sometimes it tells me to go one way and it's not the right way,if I ignore it and keep driving it will still try to reroute me but if I still ignore it then it will finally get on track.Sometimes if I don't turn when it tells me to it will have me trying to pull u turns on a major highway. If I'm downtown in a major city the c310x will not function properly I believe it looses its signal but the GPS is still showing it's working. The volume is not to high have to turn radio down really low and the headphone jack I can't hardly hear anything out of it.Last but least when I'm on cockpit the tracking is great but it always go back to airplane view after a short time then I have to push cockpit then it keeps repeating it self all over again. Other than that like the unit..Got it from Staples about Jan 15/07 for $230. on sale.

I have a new unit and it works fine after you figure out how some of it's features works. The manual generally describes all the features but fails to give any details,ie. how to save POI's,how to set up a multi-point route etc.
Wish I could find a dedicated website describing "how to" for many of the how do I do this features. Any help?

I bought the 310x based on your review. Because I can't see paying the price of a laptop or PC for a one function computer. Most people will only use it maybe 10 times a year. I will say however that if Mio comes out and charges a hundred bucks for the updated maps when I bought the unit maybe a month earlier and the new 310x's have the newer maps, I will be teed off.

We purchased a Mio C310X system. We like the system very much. We find that the included manual is not very much help. The book states that you can download a manual from the internet. We have been unable to get on to the site stated. Can you please help us retrieve a manual for our system. We know that it does much more than we have been able to do. Thank you very much.

We have THREE c310x Mio units, all bought within the last month or so. All three units have a strange "quirk." When you are routed down a highway or expressway with exits, it will direct you to get off to the right at an exit, then direct you to proceed straight for e.g. 3.7 miles. The only way to do this is to continue across to the entrance ramp for the highway/roadway you just left, get back on and proceed. This occurred in Jacksonville Florida on J. Turner Butler (at three different exits prior to my reaching the correct one) and on the Haines Street Expressway. Is there a "fix" for this?

also, the pos at times keeps asking me to go right when it is clearly a left turn (as indicated by arrow too!)

We purchased the MIO C310X a few months back when it was on sale for $150 and I am happy with it. It works better than Microsoft's Street & Trip and it signal reception is way better too.
However, the maps are kind of a problem. Although information for a 2006 map for Washington DC is posted here and included in the unit, most maps date from 2005 and at the rate of development in some areas, it is incapable of finding many streets. However, if where you are going is as recent as 2005 you should be OK.
I found that the maps had a few flaws and one dangerous error that needs to be fixed. That error has to do with a Y exit. It happened regularly in West Parm Beach, FL at the the exit of Australia Ave and Okechoobee. (It also happened to me one in San Francisco, CA.) Coming from the south on Australia, the exit is on the right. Kind of a Y exit. However, somehow the map is inacurate and the GPS places the car in the ditch on the right of the Y and off road. So, as you are approaching the exit, it says to prepare to turn LEFT. As you get closer and closer it says turn LEFT in 300 feet, then 150 feet. However, all this time the exit is on the RIGHT. But since it places you OFF ROAD, it decided to say the exit is on the LEFT of your position. That almost caused me an accident as at the last second I realized that I was not meant to go on the LEFT side of the Y, but on the RIGHT and in doing so, I kind of cut off traffic without realizing they were others in the RIGHT lane (sorry about that, whomever honk at me!). He did save me from hitting him though.
Anyway, I am pretty sure that the other GPS have similar flaws. I just think that the MIO should refrain from giving turn directions when it obviously realizes you are off road (as I noticed later, on other days, it does place the car icon in the ditch). It would be better to either tell you that it can not guide you, or warn you that because you are off road, the directions may be inaccurate.
Apart from that, the unit is great. I only have one regret. We only bought one and we have 2 cars. I should have bought 2.

Just some heads up, If your going to order the update on their site, use caution. I tried 14 times to place a order with both my debit, and credit card over the past week, and I got a card declined message every time. However, mio tech still charged my card 24.90 for every failed attempt at ordering their update, and now i'm out 348.60 dollars. After hours with their customer service, and speaking to supervisors, All ive got was a im sorry, and we will email the correct department. So i sit, with no update. Meanwhile almost 400 dollars of my money is unavailable to me, their customer service does not seem to be able to do anything, and im having to go through my bank to try and get the money back.
So if you are trying to place a order, and your card does not go through, do not keep trying. At least not with a visa card.
I was also told Visa does not work, and the only card that does is Master Card, because none of the others have yet to be "configured into the system". I was also told they have already been available in Circuit city by their customer service, and that was false. I found that out by driving to the ones near me, and they were clueless.
You would think after a week of trouble trying to obtain their update, and them charging me $348.60 on my cards, they would at least send me a free update for the trouble, but they said they cant send any updates for free. Great unit, I love it, but lame customer support.
It seems the only answer they are allowed to give, is..... "Im sorry, we will forward your concerns to the proper department, you should hear back from us in about a week, regarding your concerns"

This should save some people time and money. I went to the only 2 Circuit City stores in Maine and they did not know what I was talking about I called the 800 # on their website, gave the guy the part number that I got from another forum and he found it
I ordered 2 and standard shipping was free. Here is the direct link to the dvd upgrade right from Circuit City’s website. You will need to copy and paste it into you browsers address bar.
Got mine today, the install worked fine with XP. Don't know about maps yet since I've not gone anywhere, but it appears the POI aren't as good as before. And my rural road is still not ID correctly as the name change over two years ago.

I dropped my Mio C310x into some water. It got soaked but is not mechanically damaged. It still turns on but the touch screen no longer works. I think that if I can open the plastic shell and clean the insides, I can make it work again.
There are two screws on the bottom of the case, but undoing those only removes the bottom plastic plate. I’m still having trouble opening the rest of plastic case so I can clean the insides. I don’t know where to pry. If I pry at the case randomly with brute force, I’ll damage the case and won’t be able to reclose it.
Has anyone opened the plastic case of the Mio C310x? How is this done? Some pointers on exactly where to pry would be much appreciated.
