Garmin: Company Background and Success Story

There's a stunning article about Garmin coming out of US News and World Report that walks you through their business. It details how they keep costs down and maintain their market share of 50+% in the US despite attracting huge electronics competition to the high margined growing GPS market (Think LG, Sony, Pioneer, Philips....). They are cheap and manufacture things quickly through a mainly in-house program of design, manufacture and deliver (except apparently the aviation line). Some execs fly on Southwest airlines even, saving money the smart way. What do they do with that savings? Plow it relentlessly into design and marketing to keep ahead of competition. It's a good profile of what's happened. There are new challenges everyday though....
