Price Drop TomTom ONE (2nd Ed) at $199
This might just be the best value out there for a top branded GPS, I am sure it won't last.
What do you get in the TomTom ONE 2nd Edition?
A standard screen (3.5-inch) GPS that offers turn by turn directions with verbal cues, but not with Text to speech (TTS) directions where it speaks the name. The unit contains maps of the US/Canada, and has an accurate high sensitivity GPS chipset receiver.
TomTom has announced and just started selling the TomTom ONE 3rd Edition, which is $249. For the extra $50, you’ll get an updated interface that offers you the ability to get more updated maps via the MapShare program, and the Help ME! screen that allows quick access to help related to service stations, police, hospitals, etc. Finally the new TomTom ONE will accept an optional TMC receiver to get TMC Traffic updates.
Some people have asked if TomTom will push this software update to the older versions, so that you can get these software features on the older TomTom ONE units. Honestly, I have no idea, but my hope is that they will. I can't guarantee it though. One benefit would be to get the entire installed base of older TomTom ONE's onto the MapShare network, building better maps a LOT faster.
Anyway...
Which one to choose?
If you are on a budget, go for the $199 version. Simple enough.
The new TomTom ONE 3rd edition with MapShare is cutting edge and its importance in making high quality maps will only grow. I like the feature a lot, and if you can afford the $50, I think it will pay out in the coming years.
