Upgrade Your TomTom ONE Software! – New Operating System on TomTom One XL!

So I plugged in my TomTom ONE XL (that I bought for a Review a while ago) into my newly upgraded TomTom HOME, and it downloaded some software for the TomTom ONE XL, that has the new TomTom Operating system on it.

I now have Help ME!, and a new looking Route Overview that is similar to the TomTom ONE GO 720 interface. I also have the TomTom MapShare capabilities on the TomTom ONE XL! Big news. So my TomTom ONE XL software is now version 7.120.

I already had TomTom HOME installed on my computer, and a pop-up asked me to upgrade, which I have been putting off for a couple of weeks. Anyway, I finally did the TomTom HOME upgrade and somehow (I wasn’t really paying attention), my old model TomTom ONE XL now has the newest operating system on it. Great!

Finally, this also includes putting the Status Bar on the side of the screen which once you are used to it, I think it's an excellent layout.

Not sure if this will apply to the standard screen TomTom ONE which is selling at a $50 discount to the new TomTom ONE 3rd edition, but if you can upgrade a TomTom ONE to include MapShare and HelpMe!, it starts to make sense to buy the older version of the TomTom ONE and upgrade the software instead of buying the newer TomTom ONE 3rd edition; that is if you don’t want the TMC capability that is also available only on the newest version of the TomTom ONE.

Can anyone upgrade their TomTom ONE (standard screen) the same way?

I've a Tomtom One XL 4S00.000 but I lost the SD card. Without that SD Card it doesn't run. Please give an idea how can I fix this problem? Is there anyway I can have that?

I received a Tom One XL (Blue Box) for Xmas. And I've noticed that the newer neighborhoods are not on my city map. Does this mean that I have to shell out $$$ for a new map? Like I say, its only almost 3 months old!

11-9-2008: just installed the free update for TOMTOM One from TOMTOM Home2 software.
This is crap. DON'T install the free update.
My GPS is 2 blocks off now. Enter a street address and it's 2 block off.
This is crap. TOMTOM support is no help.

Hello everybody,

I have a secong generation TomTom One XL HD traffic. I saw the new interface on the TomTom 720 HD Traffic, especially the screen that shows the intesection details.
As the two machines are similar, is there a way to upload the new SW and new options that exist on the TomTom 720 HD Traffic to my XL?
Please feel free to email me at

May thanks,

I recently allowed the Home software to upgrade my TomTom One 3rd Edition from 7.161 to 8.01. I wish I had not done this. I lost my compass which can be pointing to the destination with the distance. I found this to be a very useful feature. Now the compass only points North. There are no options, except to turn it off altogether. To be fair I should mention that I did gain some new graphics representing my vehicle. Does anybody know how to get back the previous operating system? Customer support will not assist me with this. I have an identical TomTom One which has not been "upgraded". My attempt at cloning the second unit into the first unit have not been successful.

I read in the above comments the article from Mike regarding filling in remainder of new street and I would like to know how he accomplished that in Map Share.
I have no problems renaming streets etc. ...but I'm kind-of lost to add in a new street.
I also wonder if there are any instruction manuals for the Map Share software out there.
I too am using an upgraded TomTom One 2nd edition.

I'm in Canada...I updated my 2nd edition about 4 months ago with app. 7.120 and the ver 675 of US/Canada maps, and everything is working well. I had to pay for map upgrade...but it was less expensive than purchasing the 3rd edition or an XL.

And by the way...the GPS was a lot quicker locating a satelite after swich on, than before the upgrade!

A quick note about the 7.120 update and my TomTom One. Since I installed the update, it now takes well over a minute to aquire a satellite. Before the upgrade, it took under 15 seconds. Even the latest download of Quick GPS Fix data does not help. Very annoying.

I have a TomTom 2nd Edition and successfully upgraded the application software to 7.120. I also have the issue where Map Share won't work (it complains that my maps are out of date).

I have the USA and Canada map version 665.1293. It appears that people running version 675 of the maps have MapShare operational. I have e-mailed TomTom support about getting a free map upgrade since my GPS is under 4 months old and still have not heard anything from them (almost 2 weeks).

Other forum posts I found said that TomTom will NOT give them free map updates. If this is true, I hope that TomTom steps up to the plate and updates their maps so others can utilize Map Share. After all, it certainly seems in TomTom's best interest to do so.

I am surprised that Carlo was able to update to the 7.x software *without* the map, as I have been told that the reason that I do not see the 7.x application as an option is exactly because I don't already own the newest maps.

This sequence of events is not only confusing (since I am not totally convinced that buying the new map will indeed make everything work well, since multiple people have had different experiences and different stories told to them), but it is also frustrating as my earlier post was based on a misleading response from customer support that implied that those with the 2nd edition would be "gradfathered in".

Instead of the great customer support that I thought I was going to get, instead I have gotten a bit of the run-around and not-confidence-inspiring bit of money-grab. Supporting a device that is

I have too upgraded my one 2nd edition to 7.x software but am unable to use mapshare. My device tells me that my map is out of date to upgrade it. Thing is, it cost $ to upgrade the map and I want to feel a little more secure regarding the mapshare working on 2nd edition before shelling out the cash.

Mike, what version of map are you running? I am currently running USA and Canada version 665. Version 675 is available for download. I am wondering if I update to 675 if mapshare will be magically enabled!

It works on the tomtom one (second edition)! I'm verifying now. Here is the background. I bought the 2nd edition a week ago. worked great minus a few flaws i found out vacationing in a major city. POI telephone numbers, ability to update map for construction and the device remember it the next time. I researched around and found that tomtom made updated software which included the Map Share software. This was the answer, telephone numbers with the POIs (resturants etc) Help Me feature and most of all the Map Share. But, the tomtom website said mapshare is only on the 3rd edition and the XL. Then I called support to verify and they said the MapShare only works on the 3rd edition. The 3rd edition had the MapShare preinstalled and you can download the updated software onto the XL but only the Help Me feature and not the mapshare worked on the XL. Basiclly leading me to buy the 3rd edition. Then I was on your website (great site by the way) and you got it to work on the XL! so then I tried the same thing on the 2nd edition (mine) and wha-la. I go a whole new look, icons, everything. To include the Help Me AND the MAPShare. So now I'm testing it to verify, but it looks like it works. I made a correction and when i connected it to the tomtom home software it said, thank you for your contribution. Haven't downloaded any corrections yet though. it says none are available. Also on my map screen it shows the correction i made in the color red. basiclly I extended the street cause construction of the street was complete. So it shows a white street then it extends in red. So yes looks like you were right. Buy the tomtom one (second edition) for approx $200 now, just last week was $300 and if you can live without the ablility to attach that new reciever accessory, then you have a great gps. my wife loves the new upgrade. I basiclly have a newer, better gps than the one i just used last week.

Just checked with Tomtom support and they say that this upgrade will be available for the standard screen One (2nd generation) by the end of the month (i.e., by October 1). Yeah!

It looks like you do NOT get this update with the "old" One (2nd ed.).

If anyone manages to get this update please post, but it does nt look promising.

Sadly, no, the whole state button/hierarchy that you find on the TomTom GO720 is not there. Or better said, I can't get it to come out that way. One thing that I do like is that you can make the TomTom ONE search list for towns expand and get rid of the keyboard to quickly search through the list of towns there.....

Scott is the new interface on your XL bringing up the state first for navigation?
