TomTom Inks Global Samsung Deal - Maps, Traffic Feeds and More


TomTom has inked a deal with mobile phone maker Samsung to provide maps, traffic feeds, 3D City buildings and features as well as Points of interest and Speed Camera locations.

Recall that TomTom owns a heavyweight in the map making world, TeleAtlas, and Samsung is looking for a global partner to help them deliver content to their line-up with limited complexity. The new Wave3 smartphone will have the new TomTom content on it.

That's a pretty bold, and interesting call. I like it. It would conclude the slide from stand alone PND to mobile phone as the device of choice. They could easily go with Google, but the TomTom package must offer a more seamless global approach, and like you said, it may have a more significant implication, like it being the first step in a courtship.

Scott, I think there is a good chance of Samsung buying TomTom since it looks like they want to go to their own platform. Either way this is a big move since Samsung is the biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world.
