Magellan ToughCase for the iPhone and iPod Touch - Onboard Battery and GPS Chipset

MagellanToughCase_Frnt.jpg

Magellan announced their ToughCase yesterday for iPhones (3G and 3GS) and late gen iPod Touches. It's a shame to just call it a case, because it really is a whole lot more. The case is not only water resistant to IPX7 standards, but it has an onboard rechargeable battery and a SIRFStar III GPS chipset that will deliver the same legendary performance that so many GPS units have enjoyed over the recent years with this chipset.

So clearly this isn't geared towards using just when you are in the car navigating with the Magellan RoadMate for the iPhone, but also when you are outdoors enjoying other pursuits; like hiking, kayaking or Geocaching. Not only does the case protect but it also allows you to use the touchscreen functionality at anytime. Priced at $199, the case will be available at major retailers and is already available at the Magellan Website.

Magellan RoadMate 1420 - Deal of the Day - $79

magellanRoadmate1420.jpg

It's summer driving season and these GPS specials are coming along just in time. Today Amazon is offering the Magellan RoadMate 1420 GPS for $79 (Usually about $140). The widescreen GPS offers text to speech capability (says road names), information from "AAA" on points of interest, an easy one touch menu from the main screen that offers favorites at your fingertips, and maps of contiguous U.S., Hawaii & Puerto Rico.

Bottom line is that this offers a couple of the key capabilities that I always look for: widescreen and text to speech capability. The Magellan interface is not as clean as a Garmin or a TomTom, but at $79, this is a really good price for the capability. Shop it versus the - Garmin Nuvi 255W - Widescreen GPS

TomTom Map Updates - Latest Updates Plus Six Months Free

TomTom has a pretty good deal going on right now for map updates. You could elect to buy one map update to get the update for your GPS, or you could subscribe to a year's worth of upgrade service for less. Oh, yea, they'll throw in an extra six months of service for free too. the price difference is a decent one versus the one-time upgrade offer - see the graphic below. This deal is also pretty good, as you start to add it all up. The offer is good on one device.
From TomTom: How does it work?1) Each time you connect your device to your computer, TomTom HOME will let you know if a new map is waiting for you.2) New maps are released each quarter and are added to your account as soon as they are available. Warning - Map Update Service starts with the latest map, so you may have to upgrade your map at a discounted price

Garmin eTrex Venture HC - Deal of the Day - $99

GarminetrexVentureHC.jpg

Amazon has the Garmin eTrex Venture HC available for a good discount - $99 today only. The eTrex models are an older footprint that has undergone almost constant updating since I bought my first one over a decade ago.

The Venture HC has some features that I like, including color screen, ability to load a reasonable amount of additional maps (think Topo maps here) via USB cable, a high sensitivity GPS receiver so you can get and keep a satellite fix in the trees.

The compact unit gives you easy pocketable GPS capabilities in the woods or with an optional handlebar mount, a great biking unit. It will stand up the regular wet weather too with its IPX7 water resistance rating.
