Black Friday GPS Sales and Deals - Full Wrap-Up

Yes, it's that time of year - Black Friday is upon us, and here's the Black Friday GPS Shopping Wrap-up. All the sales, all the prices, and if you scroll the the bottom, you'll see a guide to which GPS units are worth fighting for and which are not.

Some prices are great, and some aren't worth it. Buy a recent model, and a name brand and whatever you do, don't pick up a crap-co brand that is sitting next to the candy at the check-out. GPS unit are pretty inexpensive now and it's worth getting a great brand name product. They can be had easily for under $100. Gone this year are the smaller 3.5-inch units, replaced by the 4.3-inch units as the mainline deals.

  • Garmin Nuvi 40LM - $99 - 4.3-inch screen, lifetime map updates

Staples

Target

  • TomTom VIA 1505M - $89 - 5-inch screen, lifetime maps - note this is a great price but is an "Earlybird" item.

WalMart

  • Magellan RoadMate - "4.7-inch GPS" - not sure on the model but you can grab one for $69
Here are a couple of tips for picking a GPS.
  1. If you are going out for a GPS alone, consider shopping online, a lot of these outlets have the same pricing online starting on Thanksgiving.
  2. Consider how it will be used before buying - daily commuter who fights traffic, occasional user, or someone older who needs a bigger screen to see the maps.
  3. Spend a few extra bucks for lifetime map upgrades as long as you don't mind hooking up your GPS to your computer to download those maps. This feature is the most competitive one that has been added over the years, and adds a bit more confidence to your regular travels.
  4. Lifetime traffic on most models is of marginal assistance; they will highlight major messes, are not state-of-the-art. The only exception is the TomTom LIVE model.

Basic GPS Unit

I would point you towards a basic unit that has a 4.3-inch screen and potentially lifetime map updates - Consider Garmin Nuvi 40's, which are the most recent models from Garmin in this class. The 1300's are another one to consider from Garmin that is a year older, but still reliable.

TomTom's XL 350 fits the bill here. While not necessarily a low end unit, the prices are good on the TomTom "XXL" units, which are a bit older, but still good. Think of the "XXL550" or "550" as good sub-$100 units at select stores above. They are competitive with the prices for the Garmin units mentioned here.

Larger Screen 5-Inch Models

Great for those who have a long way to the windshield, or who need a little extra help seeing the maps.

Garmin Nuvi 50's are a good choice here; latest "2012 models" and offer good features. The Garmin 1400's are models to consider, but I need to call out that $149 for a Nuvi 1490LMT is not a great deal at Sam's Club - it adds Bluetooth handsfree but is hardly worth the extra money IMHO. Look to the Nuvi 1450LMT at Office Depot.

TomTom has plenty of offers in the mix this year - the Via series is a good choice with solid basic features and a 5-inch screen; look to the VIA 1505's, or the TomTom 1535 unit at BJ's Club.

Daily Commuter

If you have access, and can fight the onslaught at BestBuy, go for the TomTom 1535 LIVE unit. The Live services provide best in class traffic capabilities and can truly ease a commuter's headaches.

Happy hunting and happy Thanksgiving.

Cyber Monday GPS Deals - Updated

Hope your Thanksgiving holiday went well and if you didn't find a GPS, there are still some good deals out there for GPS specials.

Net: For raw prices on a high quality deal, WalMart still has a nice offer on the TomTom XL 335 SE. For a nice selection on several deals at the $99 price point, check out Amazon.

WalMart

Still offering the TomTom XL 335 SE now in their "CyberWeek" sale. Check it out for $79. Read my Post on the TomTom XL 335 SE for more information and features.

Amazon

UPDATE: This is a hot one for only $89 as Amazon's second Deal of the Day: "Due to high demand the VIZIO LCD HDTV has sold out, but we have another great deal for you today....." -TomTom XXL 540M 5-Inch Widescreen (Lifetime Maps Edition) from Amazon:

I pulled several deals that looked good at or below the $99 price point. Looking at the GPS Best Sellers List at Amazon, it looks like people want Garmins, but are looking past a solid entry level product from one of their latest launches - the Nuvi 1300 for $99, instead opting for older models or smaller models for a slightly lower price. The newer layout is a good one, and is more intuitive. Check it out first if you want a $99 unit.

Threw in the Forerunner 305 at $129 as this is a good price for this standard in the GPS running monitors.

Garmin and TomTom Specific Deals directly from the makers

Garmin Deals on Accessories - here are a few of the highlights....

  • NuMaps Lifetime subscription - $69, down from $99 (great for Nuvi units that don't already have a lifetime map subscription)
  • BirdsEye Satellite Images - $24, down from $29 per year. Great for handheld owners (Dakota, Oregon and Colorado units) to show satellite images right on the units.
  • Topo 100K - great for handheld and fitness units. $69 down from $99.
  • HeartRate Monitor - $35 down from $60 - works with ANT+ spectrum on Garmin units, or with the iPhone using the Fisica Sensor Key.

At the Garmin Cyber Monday Event

TomTom Star Wars Limited Edition Navigators and Star Wars Voices

TomTomStarWars.jpg

Come on now, you know you want one. TomTom is selling special Star Wars navigators with Star Wars covers that will help you navigate a star system or at least a neighborhood near you. There are also deals today on the Star Wars voices for the TomTom. Shop TomTom for more details.

At the TomTom Cyber Monday Event

TomTom iPhone App Deal

Mentioned this yesterday, but the TomTom iPhone App is on sale today; as little as $35 for the US Only version of the Application.

Available at TomTom iTunes

Other Deals to Consider

Staples

They already sold out two GPS deals - the TomTom XXL 540S for $79 (killer deal), and the Magellan RoadMate 3045 - $99. They still have a good solid Garmin deal that offers lifetime traffic and Bluetooth Handsfree.

Garmin Nuvi 265 WT - $119 - Widescreen, 4.3-inch unit plus lifetime free traffic subscription. This includes a Bluetooth Handsfree feature that adds some nice appeal for people who want to talk handsfree on their Bluetooth phone.

BestBuy

BestBuy is offering two Garmins online; the Nuvi 205 for $79 and the Nuvi 1300 for $99 - I would recommend the extra $20 for the Nuvi 1300. The newer design, wide screen and new features make this well worth the extra $20.

Garmin Nuvi 1300 - $99 - Widescreen, US Maps + PR (except AK), text to speech, and ecoRoute which gives you fuel saving routes to choose from.

Amazon Black Friday "Week" - Best Values Going

TomTom540_sm.jpg

The deals keep coming, but I have to say that right now, the TomTom XXL 540M is the best value out there. Sure there are cheaper deals, but right now, the value is here.

TomTom XXL 540M Features

You get a 5" screen, text to speech, lane guidance, and lifetime map updates for the unit. Right now that means that you can update the maps about quarterly giving you pretty much the freshest maps available in a stand alone navigator. (This is the XXL 540S model plus Lifetime Maps)

Compare vs. Black Friday Deals

The price of $99 isn't going to be beaten for value on Black Friday GPS Deals, (See our Black Friday Buying Guide) and so why not buy now and focus on other stuff later this week?

The TomTom XXL 540M is only $99, and being the best GPS seller at Amazon at this writing, the inventory may not last.

Cyber Monday Best GPS Sales and Deals

Not to be outdone, online GPS Sales are still roaring despite the inventory squeeze of a pretty successful Black Friday.

Automotive GPS Gift Guide - don't forget to check out our gift guide this year to cut through the noise and figure out what the top rated GPS units are in each price segment.

Cyber Monday Deals Already!

Amazon

Amazon has the broadest selection of units at a discount. While the hot deals page below says Black Friday - the deals from the Cyber Monday are reflected in the price. This GPS Deals page is the best collection of discounts that they show in one place so check out the Amazon's GPS Deals Page - Lots of "Hot Deals" going on. Most notably they have:

  • Magellan RoadMate 1220 - $89 - I have been using this for an upcoming review and have been impressed with it. For $89, it has Text to Speech that I think is essential for a good unit.
  • Garmin Nuvi 260W - $114 - a good step up that includes widescreen and text to speech.

Best Buy

BestBuy has several GPS units available with competitive, but not amazing prices on GPS units. The one that is a pretty good value for the money is the:

  • TomTom XXL 540 S - a 5-inch screen super sized unit that offers text to speech and a whole lot more for those who want the extra screen real estate. - More Information

Staples

  • TomTom ONE 130 - $79 - standard size screen without text to speech at a very low price.
  • Garmins are available at a doscount, but mostly on their newest, slightly higher priced items. One in particular that I like is the Nuvi 1300 - a widescreen with text to speech for $149 after instant rebate
  • Magellan Roadmate 1470 - $139 which is almost 50% off the $249 regular price. This biggie 4.7-inch widescreen is bigger than the regular 4.3-inch widescreens.

WalMart

  • TomTom 335 SE - $89 - still left over from Black Friday, this is one of the best deals around. Text to speech and a widescreen.

Black Friday - Hot Deals Some Already Gone Some Still Sizzling

TomTomONE125SE.jpg

There are a ton of deals out there for Black Friday, and this morning was a bit rough for those of us who were out in the colder weather braving the rain.

New to GPS? - Read my Automotive Buying Guide to see what features you should be looking for in a GPS

WALMART

  • While the TomTom ONE 125 SE ($59) is sold out online, the TomTom XL 325 SE widescreen unit is still available for $89; I think it's a better value for the money spent, the extra $30 will be worth it over the long haul.

Amazon

  • Amazon's Deal of the Day - Garmin Nuvi 285W/285WT - A great navigator for $129 right now. Offers Widescreen, Text to Speech, Speed Limit display, Bluetooth Handsfree, and for a time, traffic. Please note that in 2012 the MSN Feature will shut off. Traffic capabilities will be OK for a year+. This is an excellent deal for the money even without the MSN feature.
  • Garmin Nuvi 255W - for $119 - still has Text to Speech and widescreen, but not the Bluetooth or traffic. Still a great deal, this was going for around $159 last week. See my Full Review
  • Amazon has a lot of Amazon Black Friday Deals - with Hot Deals still coming (too many to list) later today (I think in an hour or so even though they list 10"PM") that appear to be deeply discounted including The TomTom ONE 130, TomTom XL 340S, Garmin Nuvi 1200, Garmin Nuvi 1350T, Nuvi 255W, and more...

Staples

  • Garmin Nuvi 255W - for $119 also at Staples, again ee my Full Review for more info; Text to speech, widescreen, I recently bought one of these as a gift; very respectable model without a lot of bells and whistles.
  • TomTom XL 330 - $99 after rebate - no Text to speech, but a widescreen unit and you can also get a free case after rebate. A lot of value below the $100 price point. See my Full Review

New Egg

  • TomTom ONE 140 - standard size screen - $59 - rock bottom price for this solid entry level device. No Text to speech, but the deal is hard to pass up. More Information

TomTom 125SE and 325SE - WalMart Black Friday GPS - Wonder Deals?

TomTomONE125SE.jpg

The TomTom ONE 125SE ($59) is the Best Black Friday Deal out there in a standard screen GPS, bar none. TomTom has a history of getting a special edition out there for the holiday shopping season, merchandising the heck out of it and gobbling up sales at deep discounts.

Here's the run down on the TomTom 125 SE:

  • 3.5 inch touchscreen in a slim, lightweight device;
  • Preloaded maps of the US;
  • Spoken instructions, including "text to speech" for spoken street names;
  • Preloaded Points of Interest: millions of points of interest enhance the travelling experience and help users easily find gas stations, hotels, restaurants and more;
  • Award-winning Fold and Go EasyPort® Mount, that easily folds to fit in any bag or shirt pocket.

If you are curious about what the TomTom ONE 125 SE will perform like, check out my Full Review on the TomTom 125 - the addition of the Text to Speech will make the TomTom 125 SE a lot more useful.

The TomTom 325SE is the widescreen version of the amazing TomTom deal at $89. Again a rundown of the TomTom 325SE features:

  • Extra wide 4.3 inch touchscreen;
  • Preloaded maps of the US;
  • Spoken instructions, including "text to speech" for spoken street names;
  • Preloaded Points of Interest: millions of points of interest enhance the travelling experience and help users easily find gas stations, hotels, restaurants and more;
  • Award-winning Fold and Go EasyPort® Mount, that easily folds to fit in any bag or shirt pocket;

Good luck if you are going out to grab one of these at Walmart.

See my Automotive buying Guide - and learn about some key features that I think are worth investing in. Based on that, I would recommend paying the extra money for the TomTom 325SE above over the smaller screen TomTom 125 SE.

If you can't get these at Walmart, consider a few alternatives:

Standard Screen - Adds Text to Speech - OK Place to Start

Widescreen and Text to Speech - My Recommended Place to Start
