Save 10% on Car Electronics with Shopkick at BestBuy

Don't know if you've heard of Shopkick yet, but it is a mobile App available for the iPhone. Shopkick is like Foursquare in that you "check-In", but it also has a game-like feel where you earn points for checking in, and for doing different tasks inside the store like scanning bar codes of marketed products, or by trying a new pair of pant on, depending on the store. What do you do with the points? Earn a lot then redeem for gift cards, or simply give them to any number of charities represented in the site.

BestBuy is an early supporter of the App, and are currently offering 10% off Car Electronics (including GPS units) when you use ShopKick and "Use" the offer in the App. To use the App, you just need to provide your phone number.... which may provide a behind the scenes link and ROI associated with your phone. Not sure, but I'll take the discount, and you should check it out too.

BestBuy is also offering 10% off Home theater, Computing, and other specific deals on specific products. See the App for full details.

Garmin Nuvi 885 - Deal of the Day - $99

The Garmin Nuvi 885 is the Amazon Deal of the Day for $99 which is steal for this widescreen unit featuring speech recognition. Yes, you can talk to the unit to give it directions on which destination to choose. While you can't talk to it like a friend, you can give it voice commands to help keep you attention on the road, and not tapping out letters on its screen.

It also features Maps of North America, Text to Speech (Says street names), and Lane Assist/Junction view - shows you a mock image of an upcoming highway intersection with an arrow to indicate where you need to go. This makes highway driving much much easier when interchanges start getting complex.

Navigon iPhone Apps - On Sale for 50% off

Navigon has its iPhone Apps on sale now in in the iTunes store to celebrate its one year anniversary of launching the Mobile Navigator. Hard to believe that it was just a year ago that all of these navigation Apps blew into town, but it's true. Navigon has over a million iPhone users worldwide and is the number one grossing App in the iTunes store - according to their recent tweet.

So the Navigon MobileNavigator North America iconis 50% off at $39, while the Navigon MobileNavigator US iconis $24 and finally the Navigon Regional Apps (East, Central and West) icon for only $14. I mean at that price they are so cheap you have to get one.

I like the Navigon iPhone App a lot and have used it a fair amount over the last year. They have upgraded the features steadily, and offer an in-app purchase of traffic services (also discounted at half off for $12 a year) that gives you Inrix based data for commuting through traffic and hopefully avoiding some of the headaches associated with it.

So while I have a half dozen navigational options at my fingertips at any one time, the Apps for the iPhone have been great, and a life saver when I find myself out with friends and they don't have a GPS. Better hurry - this sale lasts until Sunday.

TomTom XL 340S LIVE - Connected GPS for $129

TomTom has a pretty good deal running for the TomTom 340S LIVE connected, widescreen GPS - $129. The LIVE service is free for the first three months and provides a series of features including high quality traffic service, fuel price search, local search powered by Google, as well as local weather. A great price if you are commuting through traffic and you need higher quality traffic feeds than a standard RDS model that has limited bandwidth across the FM spectrum.

Magellan RoadMate 1420 - Deal of the Day - $79

It's summer driving season and these GPS specials are coming along just in time. Today Amazon is offering the Magellan RoadMate 1420 GPS for $79 (Usually about $140). The widescreen GPS offers text to speech capability (says road names), information from "AAA" on points of interest, an easy one touch menu from the main screen that offers favorites at your fingertips, and maps of contiguous U.S., Hawaii & Puerto Rico.

Bottom line is that this offers a couple of the key capabilities that I always look for: widescreen and text to speech capability. The Magellan interface is not as clean as a Garmin or a TomTom, but at $79, this is a really good price for the capability. Shop it versus the - Garmin Nuvi 255W - Widescreen GPS

Garmin eTrex Venture HC - Deal of the Day - $99

Amazon has the Garmin eTrex Venture HC available for a good discount - $99 today only. The eTrex models are an older footprint that has undergone almost constant updating since I bought my first one over a decade ago.

The Venture HC has some features that I like, including color screen, ability to load a reasonable amount of additional maps (think Topo maps here) via USB cable, a high sensitivity GPS receiver so you can get and keep a satellite fix in the trees.

The compact unit gives you easy pocketable GPS capabilities in the woods or with an optional handlebar mount, a great biking unit. It will stand up the regular wet weather too with its IPX7 water resistance rating.

Magellan 1700 - Hugescreen GPS - $179 at Costco

The Magellan 1700, hugescreen (7-inch) GPS is available at Costco for $179, after a $50 discount. The Magellan 1700 offers some pretty good features like one touch commands, giving you access to key functions in the swipe of a finger, lane assist, text to speech and maps of the US and Canada. The partnership between AAA and Magellan also brings a great set of POI information with ratings and reviews of certain locations around you when you are on the road. One feature I like is the highway exit POI lookup, giving you the ability to figure out what's available at the next exit; good food or bad, gas station or not.....

Offer good through May 9th. Thanks Frank for sending this in.

TomTom XL 340S - Deal of the Day

Thumbnail image for TomTomONEXL340Front.jpg
The TomTom XL 340S is Amazon's Deal of the Day at a pretty impressive $89. The 4.3-inch widescreen unit comes with Text to Speech, maps for the US, Canada and Mexico, and features some better than average capabilities. TomTom's IQ Routes (historical average speeds to make better predictions of travel time), advanced lane guidance (shows you which lane to be in), and its Easy Port fold flat and go mount make this one pretty attractive.

The TomTom XL 340S adds Mexican maps above the 330S. I liked the TomTom XL 330S when I reviewed it. (The concerns over the audio level are long resolved.)

Better hurry - these deals and the inventory usually don't last all day.
