Review: Lowrance iWay 250C

The Lowrance iWay 250C was recently announced and has been doing well in the market as a value GPS that has a lot of nice features in a great flat form factor. While the unit is small it's not small on features, including a 3.5 inch touch screen, pre-loaded maps on the unit for the US and Canada, as well as more than 4.5 million Points of Interest (POI). We reviewed the Lowrance iWay 350C last year and found it to be very customizable in terms of the amount and type of data you wanted to have displayed. The iWay 250C is similar, and has the ability to load up or slim down on the data fields.

Garmin StreetPilot C340 vs. Lowrance iWay 350c

We have had a lot of requests for a comparison of the Garmin StreetPilot C340 and the Lowrance iWay 350c. Both are mid-tier priced GPS units for the car that are good performers in their own way. We have used them both at the GPS Lodge, and wrote up reviews on them.

Review: Lowrance iWay 350c Review by GPS Lodge

The Lowrance iWay 350C is a mid-tier Automotive GPS device that is loaded with features that can blow you away. It’s a nice unit that has an easy to read 3.5” touchscreen, comes pre-loaded with millions of Points of Interest and Maps, as well as added capabilities that make the iWay 350c stand out as something better that a plain vanilla navigation device. It’s impressive to have the MP3 playing capability in a GPS unit integrated with the FM modulator, working seamlessly with the text to voice directions telling you to "Turn Left on Main Street". I think that it’s a strong contender in the mid-tier category. Lowrance did a good job integrating most features, but as a result of the long list of customizations the unit is a bit bogged down trying to jam so much in. It may appeal well to a GPS enthusiast person, and might just be over the head of your non-techie user. I would liken the iWay 350c to a Windows machine with all of its capabilities and customizations it can get hard to navigate, whereas an Apple makes the interface a dream, and makes things so easy your grandmother can figure it out. So, if you don’t mind a few inconveniences the iWay 350c can offer you a lot. If you’re a total novice with little patience, you might want to look elsewhere.

Lowrance iWay 350C Arrives for Review at the GPS Lodge

The Lowrance iWay 350C arrived for review at the GPS Lodge and we are pretty happy to see it. Lowrance has been ramping up production on these and I had to wait for Santa to get all of his delivered before I could get a review unit - I don't resent it; it's great sounds like business is brisk. The Lowrance iWay 350 was recently released and is in the crowded mid-tier automotive GPS segment. It has lots of features laid out in a nice compact product. The 3.5" backlit LCD touch screen is bright and is easy to read. The unit gives you turn-by-turn voice guided directions on your way while navigating, telling "Turn Right on Main Street" and not "Turn Right in 400 feet." This is quickly becoming a standard feature and one that I have come to appreciate. I think that this feature is great when turning streets start to get close together, and you need that extra reassurance of what street to turn onto. Another nice feature is the on-board lithium ion, which allows you to operate without being tethered to the car power outlet.

The Lowrance iWay 350c gets the "Best New Mobile Electronics Entertainment Product for 2006" during SEMA show.

Lowrance today announced that its new, compact, cordless iWay 350c multimedia Automotive GPS Color Portable Automotive GPS won the "Best New Mobile Electronics Entertainment Product for 2006" at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) 2005 Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The SEMA show, where Lowrance introduced the new iWay 350c, is the premier automotive specialty performance products trade event in the world featuring performance, accessories, restoration and motorsports products. Lowrance iWay 350C

Lowrance is moving into the lower end of car GPS units with the Lowrance iWay 350C. It's a feature packed GPS unit that extends the GPS unit with some great extras like photo viewing, MP3 playback, and FM modulation for facilitating the MP3 playback. All of this fits in a tight bundle of GPS features that makes the Lowrance iWay 350 an appealing product in an ever crowded lower tier of the automotive GPS segment.
