GPS Lodge: Monthly Round Up for March 2006

It was a big month for new GPS announcements, partially due to the fact that CeBIT took place in Germany and the fact that many manufacturers are readying their new fleet of GPS units for the summer months. The spring quarter is a big quarter for companies like Magellan, Garmin and TomTom who tend to sell the majority of mobile GPS units.

TomTom launched their new line of TomTom GO’s: TomTom GO 510, TomTom GO 710 and the flagship TomTom GO 910. These all have a widescreen format.

Garmin announced a new mid-tier line: StreetPilot C510, StreetPilot C530 and the StreetPilot C550, with Bluetooth functionality.
They also made a push into adding GPS to mobile smart phones with the Garmin Mobile 20.
There are a couple of new Nuvi’s: the Nuvi 310 and the Nuvi 360 with Bluetooth functionality.
The new GPSMap 378 and GPSMap 478 are land and sea models for navigation on the water and on the road.
Finally, Garmin introduced a new entry level color handheld GPS the eTrex Venture Cx with SiRF star III chipset.

Navman just announced a new line of mobile GPS units. The Navman iCN720 and Navman iCN 750 come with a nice widescreen high resolution display. Navman also announced that you can take pictures with your new iCN and use those pictures to mark Points of Interest, as well as share those pictures with friends and family.

There were several announcements that talked of connectivity for GPS units; opening up the opportunity to track your friends’ locations on your GPS, or your workers, or your arch enemy if you can figure out how to buddy up with him or her. Read more in TomTom WORK and Garmin Buddies.

We also saw evidence of new Magellan products coming to the market with the leak of the Magellan RoadMate 860T and the RoadMate 3000T, both traffic capable.

Here at the GPS Lodge, we received the Garmin Forerunner 205 for Review, (so far so good - I really like it a lot) and offered our opinion on the Garmin StreetPilot C340 vs. the Lowrance iWay 350c.

Finally, we’re excited about our improved mailing list. If you want a weekly recap of the events in the GPS world delivered to your inbox as well as occasional exclusive items, sign up below.

GPS Lodge: Monthly Round Up for February 2006

February was a busy month for earnings announcements as we saw three blockbuster announcements come through. We saw Garmin announce that they had profits up 82% over year ago, TomTom announce that they had earnings up a whopping 411%, and are now #2 in the US market for mobile GPS devices. Also, we reported on chipset maker SiRF, whose SiRF star III chipset is responsible for powering a whole lot of GPS units these days - their earnings were up over 100% after you factor out a bunch of one time stuff. Things are booming in the world of GPS.

We also finished our review of the mid-tier Lowrance iWay 350C. We have had a lot of people dropping us emails thanking us for this one.

Handheld game maker Gizmondo who included a GPS feature went into liquidation.

Google and Volkswagon announced that they were working together on vehicle navigation systems.

And Finally, we also reported on the availability of Garmin's newly customized GPS for Buell motorcycles., while Waypoint came out with a handheld GPS model PDA that is customized for Real Estate Agents.

GPS Lodge: Monthly Round-up For October 2005

Things are picking up here at the GPS Lodge, and October was another big month. We wrapped up the month with an announcement on the New Garmin models: the StreetPilot 7200 and 7500 - two new models that are basically media hubs for the road. Huge screens, FM modulation, MP3 playing, and video playback. Garmin also announced a StreetPilot 2730; lots of features, but not the big screens of the 7000 series. In their spare time, they also announced the new PDA - the iQue M4.

The big announcement kindof towards the end of the month was the launch of the TomTom One car GPS in Europe. This entry level GPS for the car is out in Germany, but no news of it coming to the US. Our story got picked up all over the web... Gizmodo, Engadget, PocketLint, AutoBlog.... For all of those people who found us through these sites, Welcome to the GPS Lodge.

We started the month with the announcement of the Magellan RoadMate 800 announcement. Another huge new product for the automotive GPS segment. More and more options for taking the GPS in the car!

Some other product announcements from Lowrance: iFinder Hunt C, the iFinder H2O C, as well as a very cool way to skin your iWay 500C.
Fun stuff? Check out the Golf only GPS - the SureShot, or our story on Mologogo - tracking through your NexTel phone.

We have a lot of GPS Reviews coming out this month, stay tuned.
