TomTom Home available for Download

tomtomlogo2.jpg

TomTom is making their desktop software TomTom Home available for download for folks who have models other than the new TomTom GO 510 and TomTom GO 910. The software allows you to manage your GPS on your desktop computer in ways that make the units more productive and your life a bit better. You will be able to manage your firmware, voices, your maps, Points of Interest, and color schemes.

So, while you get some goodies for your older 300, 500, 700 and ONE, you don't totally get a free pass to everything. Unfortunately you won't be able to prepare trips on your computer and download them to your older unit.

Links to the download page for both Windows and Mac OS X below.

TomTom helps Nab GPS Thief

tomtomlogo2.jpg

Earlier this year we reported on the fact that the rate of stolen GPS units was on the rise here around Boston. Well, TomTom is now reporting that they helped out the Cambridge, MA police to nab a GPS thief. Apparently TomTom, which has its US headquarters only a few miles from Cambridge, donated a TomTom GO 700 unit to the police department who used it as a decoy for a GPS thief. Well, sure enough one came long, broke into the unmarked police car while it was under surveillance and stole the TomTom GO 700. They nabbed the thief who later confessed to stealing other GPS units. Nice Job.

Big Earnings At TomTom - Raise Estimates

tomtomlogo2.jpg

TomTom turned in some impressive numbers this last quarter as business is strong. Versus last yearin the same quarter, their revenue increased 288% on a unit volume increase of 606%, and profit was up 121%. Their margins were off a bit driven by the need to move out some of the older GO units to make room for the new ones. (Humm, maybe you'll see some rock bottom sale prices on the older TomTom GO's).

TomTom’s Chief Executive Officer, Harold Goddijn said, “2006 is off to a successful and exciting start. Market demand continues to be strong and TomTom increased unit sales seven-fold compared to the first quarter of 2005. In the first quarter we successfully secured the sell through of the current TomTom GO series ahead of the introduction of the new range. In Europe, we strengthened our market leadership position and increased our market share. In the US, we expanded our distribution strength through a substantial increase in the number of retail outlets we are present in.”

Updated: Garmin vs. TomTom

It's obvious that Garmin and TomTom are tough competitors fighting for an increasing share of the marketplace in a very hot category. Their sales are up, and so are their profits. The last quarter of 2005 saw big increases in sales with the holiday shopping, and both companies registered nice growth. We also saw recently that Garmin is suing TomTom for patent infringement. See our article

Well, we thought that the folks over at the Motley Fool had a good article covering the GPS market status, but apparently they missed on the patent dispute.
